Why are we suddenly bashing .40?

It's a great round IMO. Ballistics on it are just fine.

VLTOR upper and Y/M national match BCG came in. BCG is a real work of art; may be even nicer than my LaRue.

More importantly, did they neglect to stake the gas key or is that just a bad picture?

Nope. Y/M doesn't stake their BCGs. When I heard that, I was a bit concerned. I did a bunch of research and it seems half of people think it isn't needed. Steve from Y/M stated they use red permatex and tested it with over 20,000 rounds no problem. Haven't heard of a BCG failure from Y/M. They also stated they will not warranty their products if you stake it.

.40 is more of a niche cartridge. It's a good cartridge, but it's a more purpose-built load that a lot of people are moving away from. The .40 was specifically created for LE use to defeat barriers and perform to FBI requirements. It was designed to defeat barriers the way the .45 did, but have magazine capacity like the 9mm. It made the 10mm more viable than it was in original form.
Does the .40 suck more to shoot? Depends, but generally it is more difficult.
Is it a terrible load? Not at all. It just depends on what you want out of it.

I thought it was created because FBI chicks could not deal with 10mm...

Partially. It wasn't just the chicks. Apparently most agents were having trouble with it, so they developed the .40S&W as a shortened case of the 10mm round, hence the nickname "short and weak"....true compared to the 10mm, but not overall.
