I removed mine because they are technically unnecessary. The secondary air pump (SAP) helps heat up O2 sensors (from what I've heard) during the first 30 seconds or so of start-up. After the minute or so after start-up, the SAP becomes dead weight. They are more necessary in colder climates, but I live in Florida. I simply removed the check valve and pump and installed a block-off plate. It will give you a service engine light, but I honestly could care less about what my dash looks like. I scan my car frequently enough to see when anything new might have come up. Here is what the block-off plate looks like. Hope this helps. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...1#post13814189

It will also make your car quieter upon startup and initial warm up.

There was an update on the sap in 2002 I think, they went from being flat topped to having a hose connected up there.
