Seems like all but one of the nails was already in the coffin due to poor management, etc., but it does seem like the union were too eager to put in that final nail.

dead on!

It's amazing how that works.

It's even more amazing that republicans and other dirtbags continue to blame unions.

The CEO made out well.

Quote:
Even as it played the numbers game, Hostess had to face chaos in the corner office at the worst possible time. Driscoll, the CEO, departed suddenly and without explanation in March. It may have been that the Teamsters no longer felt it could trust him. In early February, Hostess had asked the bankruptcy judge to approve a sweet new employment deal for Driscoll. Its terms guaranteed him a base annual salary of $1.5 million, plus cash incentives and "long-term incentive" compensation of up to $2 million. If Hostess liquidated or Driscoll were fired without cause, he'd still get severance pay of $1.95 million as long as he honored a noncompete agreement. -- Source

Of course he did. So will all the management. And the union bosses. They won't shed a tear about the people they represent losing their jobs.

The only people that lose are the workers.

This is all just so much hype from the "pro-business/anti-union" crowd. And is fueled by the american paranoia and obsession with twinkies.
The union "had a responsibility" to the company to redo their contract. Hogwash. They could have, but, the fact that they didn't (or might now, but, lets say they still don't) doesn't make them "bad". They are making a fiscal choice, just as Hostess did in (a) making that contract in the first place & (b) deciding to go go BK since the union didn't. Maybe the union knows things that that are not being reported. Like perhaps, some if not a majority of their members are going to have job opportunities with whoever buys some of the Hostess assets.

Does anybody here really think twinkies have disappeared from the american snack landscape forever? Seriously. Even in a BK settlement, that is a huge asset. It will be sold off, chances are with the factories that mfg them. Those factories are going to need workers. OK, the low carb diets have hit bakers of all sorts in this country. That in particular is a shrinking business. Snack foods...eh...not so much. And some of those bread making plants can be scooped up reasonably low in the BK asset sell-off to more regional bakers, who have been hit less hard and maybe converted over to mfg healthier more marketable breads. Are some of those 1800 jobs lost, yes. But, to think that all 1800 of those workers are never gonna work in that field again is just .

The better question from a business perspective is who is gonna buy the hostess snack food portion, at fire sale BK prices. I am betting on Pepsi Co. It is the snack food area their product portfolio is "weak" in. But, Kraft would seem to be the other obvious suitor, as the Nabisco line would certain fall well into their Nabisco brand.

Most pensions are subject to the companies creditors in the event of bankruptcy......it's an inherent risk factor to certain pensions (401k's are protected).

Lair, you're better at inflammatory statements than this.
