A/V Gurus : What Entry Level Receiver To Get For Home Theater?
I have an older Sony that is starting to go (some inputs stopped working and the right channel front speaker is in and out). Can anyone recommend an entry level home theater setup (under 300 bucks). I have a PS3, Comcast HD-DVR, and a couple other items that are hooked up.
I would "like" to use HDMI for audio and video if possible.

I have a lower end Yamaha that I bought in 2011. It works great and I love it. The model is RX-V467 but it is now discontinued.

Harmon Kardon Onkyo Denon and Yamaha. Save until you can get any of those 4.

This is what I have. Works for me, sure there are better out there but it's at your price point. My favorite thing is that you can use only hdmi for all your components. You plug you DVD/blu-ray, PS3/Xbox, and other hdmi components into the receiver then you run just one hdmi to you tv. You never have to change the tv input, only the receiver's input.

Onkyo's entry level pushes more W/ch than anyone else. Also has more features you'll most likely be wanting for a 5.1 setup.

Spend $68 more and get a REALLY GOOD RECEIVER.

Onkyo or Yamaha, I have had both in the past and both did there jobs really well. Bought an entry level Yamaha receiver for my parents a couple years ago, works great for what they use it for.

Onkyo, Denon, Harmon Kardon.
I have a HK because I wanted a dedicated 2.1 setup for listening to music and needed something capable of properly driving my floor standing speakers. I think I spent ~$300 and couldn't be happier. HK's designs are above and beyond anyone else at the price point IMO.

Onkyo is probably the best for a budget setup, they have good sound, and pack a lot of power and features for the price. Something like the TX-NR414 would be good a good bet, 5.1 support, network enabled, 80 watts per channel, and 6 HDMI.
I would avoid the lower end Denon, Pioneer, Marantz, etc. Those units are great in the mid-high end but IMO their lower end stuff does not sound great and still demands extra $ for the brand name. Yamaha could also be a good option although I have not personally had a great experience with their receivers. Whatever you get, I'd buy online. You can save a ton of money going through Amazon, and with an entry-level receiver it makes no sense to pay a premium for protection.

why worry about low end? you should be running 5.1 0r 7.1 anyhow
i have this pioneer, it's a bit older but hooked up to a klipsch sub and boston acoustic 7.................it kills for the price http://www.audioreview.com/cat/ampli...6_2718crx.aspx anything will be an upgrade, sony is good for video, garbage for audio

I've had good luck with the Pioneer VSX-822k/VSX-1022k the 5.1 and 7.1 versions respectively. Airplay, easy interface.

i have a nice HK 5.1 with some bose cubes FS if your interested.
I just upgraded the house to a 7.1 with in-wall setup
