Another key thread

I have an '01 330i and my key works when it wants too, ive done some searching and I do not believe its the GM5 module because the door locks behave normally when I use the key in the door to lock/unlock. I imagine it could be the battery but I'm not sure. I'm planning on getting a new key in a month but I dont want to spend $260 on a key that ultimately doesn't work after i purchase it.

Does anyone else have this problem? before I snatch out the GM5 what else should I try? Could the key battery just be reaching the end of its life and thats why it works sometimes?

the key is rather old and has been dropped, could it be the battery inside the key has a bad connection? should I go with the fix or just buy a new key?

Yes, key batteries fail after 8-10 years.

A new keyfob should only cost $160. If the dealer wants more ask for wholesale price or shop other dealers.

You need at least 1 working keyfob anyway, 2 would be wiser!

Is there a way of buying a keyfob from the dealer without being in the states? I know you need to provide your license and registration. I wonder if they would accept paper work form out of country. I purchased the vehicle there.

BMW stealership here wants $450 for a keyfob + $50 for programming

There is no programming for a key, only the keyless entry of the keyfob and you can do this in under 2 minutes yourself.

See keyfob programming www.bmwgm5.com

Not sure if any US dealers will support non US cars??

Maybe you can ask the dealer to cut you a break on the key, if you have to pay $450 for a key in USD, this is NUTS!

I just called my dealer and got quoted $180 USD, $450 USD is unbelievable unless you have an '06+

Hi Jfof,

I know about the programming, just wanted you to guys to get an idea of the prices here. Our currency is USD $

a MAF will run you $748.00 (good thing is we can buy these online). The car was sold/bought in the US, I imported it here.

I remember reading a thread were you posted about a company that sells a set of keys for about $380...only issue, if i remember correctly is that I would need to send my EWS, will have to if I can't find another solution

I would e-mail or call them and see what it is they can do and for how much.

Maybe you can check with a dealer in an adjacent country rather than the US and see what they need.

In the US usually they want you to show a copy of your drivers license and vehicle registration. Mainly for the parts department to know you actually own the car.

I am sure if you have someone in the you could try to fax, scan, email documents to and see if they can get a key and mail it to you??
