Touring rear window glass opening by itself, replacing glass release button

The rear glass in my touring started opening itself a few weeks ago. At first, the glass would be unlatched and the interior lights would be on if I left the car unlocked. Then it started popping open as soon as I unlocked the car. A few days later, it started popping open immediately after I closed it or while driving.

Locking the car would prevent the glass from opening, probably because whatever module controls the solenoid prevents opening when the car is locked. This lead me to believe that the problem did not lie in any controller or module.

I opened up the little black plastic cover on the inside of the glass at the wiper and button. Unplugging the little 2 wire connector stopped the phantom opening but still allowed me to pop the glass via the key remote. I opened up the rest of the covers on the glass and found the ground for the button. With the connector unplugged, a volt meter gave me 5VDC at one of the two wires on the button connector (pin 3) and GND at the other (pin 1). Plugging the connector back in dropped pin 3 to GND and fired the solenoid. I assumed an internal short was pulling pin 3 to GND and pried off the cover on the button/handle to see what was going on inside. The inside of the button housing was wet along with the ribbon cable and its membrane switch section. I have to assume that water/dirt/corrosion contamination will pass enough current to falsely trigger the 5VDC logic level input.

I then tried to remove the offending switch assembly but met with 12 years of corrosion between the button assembly and the wiper pivot mounted on the inside of the glass. A careful combination of force and gentle persuasion allowed me to remove the button assembly in pieces leaving the wiper pivot and glass intact. I now understand why a lazy dealer tech will claim you need new glass just to fix this button. Look for photos later this week.

While I was typing that up, I received an e-email that one of the parts is NLA. Tischer's website and e-mail system kindly leaves out any reference to part numbers [/sarcasm] but the text of the message gave the the part numbers in question. The gasket that goes under the button assembly supersedes to the button itself. Perhaps the latest version of the button comes with the gasket?

Jason at Tischer believes the button now comes with the gasket.

Here is my amended parts list:
Hex nut, 07147172628
Hex nut, M8, 07119921104
Rear window key button with micro switch AND GASKET?, 61319200673
WAVE WASHER, 07119904115 $0.09
Gasket, 61627197857

This assumes the wiper spindle is still useable. It looked like the threads were good enough after I removed/destroyed the old button. Some wire brushing will probably help. I am definitely going to apply anti-seize to everything during assembly to minimize future corrosion.

Been having this issue with the wife's car forever now, It comes and goes, sometimes is fine, other times is unlocked. I actually removed all the bulbs in the interior lights back there for fear of it draining the battery and having her get stuck. What was your total cost to fix this? I've disassembled the button area and even unplugged it, but as you noted, the window can still be unlocked with the key. I figured it was that wafer thin wire band that goes up around the glass that was f'd up.

The parts cost is something like $60 or less if you get new hardware. A new spindle, 61628220831, adds another $70 to that. Mine was good enough so I did not buy a replacement.

I received the parts last week but work and yard work have keep me busy so I have not installed them yet. The 61319200673 button comes with a rubber gasket. Also, the design has changed. There is no longer an exposed center pot metal sleeve. It looks like the plastic is overmolded to cover it. This is an improvement because the metal center sleeve was badly corroded to the wiper spindle in my car.

IMPORTANT NOTE

If you start the work but don't have the time or parts to finish, be careful when you put the car back together. If you remove the button, the only way to open the glass again is the button on your key. Of course, after 12 years and 1.21 gazillion miles, your keys or GM5 module may not work all the time leaving you no way to pop the glass again. I left off the inner plastic cover and made sure I could access the 3 pin connector with glass closed before slamming it shut. I can pop the glass by shorting pins 1 and 3 with a bent paper clip if I need to complete the repair on a day when my key doesn't want to work.

I'll save the key battery and/or GM5 module repairs for another day.

My wagon glass is possessed as well, the latch releasing itself over and over while the car is parked in the garage. In fact, I just heard it go off half a dozen times as I started typing this. My remote will unlatch the glass when I want to open it, but the button itself stopped opening the glass a few months ago.

Can you explain how/where you "pried off the cover on the button/handle"? I'm not seeing any way to do this. I've had the whole assembly off the car but didn't see a way to open the actual switch housing itself.
