This rack matching your part # came off a 325i.

This site also shows it belongs to a 325i M56:

Yup, that's going to be the one. The long number below the part number I submitted matches what I have in the car. I'm just getting even more excited ! This updated rack better be freaking awesome, lol.

Does this EVER happen on this forum? If it did, would we still be here?

I'm growing more suspicious. This is two cases of "325i racks" making there way into 330s.

The racks do not go bad that often, nor do all that many accidents happen that require the replacement of the steering rack. Even of that small number, less still are likely to have that rack replaced again through TRD or post on a forum.

So maybe there is some variation in 330 rack installation. Which wouldn't be the end of the world.

And for those of you who will inevitably disagree with me, I don't think RealOEM can be used as the end all in this discussion. I would have more faith in its accuracy if it had any record of those 10 or so part numbers the rack doctor got from ZF, which don't show up anywhere on RealOEM's search.

Stop with that talk. Two definite instances of real racks on real cars contradicting RealOEM? Please. There's obviously a rack gremlin out there putting incorrect part #s on the incorrect (and notably otherwise unmodified) cars.

It's not like a manufacturer would use whatever parts were available or in inventory from whichever supplier won the lowest bid. I mean, if TRW or ZF had production issues, the entire e46 assembly line would've shut down.

Mango seems ultra defensive about the whole zhp rack thing...I wonder if he wishes he had a zhp.

To be fair, BMW generally does list multiple part numbers in the instance that multiple suppliers are used. With the HID lights for example, BMW lists both ZKW and AL part numbers as being applicable for the sedans -- because both were used indiscriminately in facelift sedans.

So one must ask why BMW didn't list the TRW part number for later-model 330s if they were actually using them. There aren't many examples of the TRW racks being found on later 330s -- it is plausible that the racks were replaced due to an accident or something along those lines.

Now if we get a mass influx of people finding TRW racks on their 330s, then I'll agree that BMW probably did use them on more cars than documented. But right now we only have 2 known samples - statistically that means jack.

My gut feeling is that all 02+ 330s got the 712 rack while the 325s got the TRW rack. There's really no reason BMW would color code those labels if they were installed interchangeably in all E46s.

As it was supposed to be. But we now have at least two posted examples of that being contradicted. It is not certain.

Right. But those are 2 vehicles with unknown histories.

Rack's at the post office. Will be picking it up this Friday and I'll be sure to post pics of the mysterious 325i rack.

I just wanna know how you bleed a power steering system. Is there some process to it? Every guide I've seen says just fill it up and turn it lock to lock a few times.

I might replace the pump so I don't think I'll have to worry about that. I'm just waiting for the outer tie-rods and hydraulic hoses to come in. From what I remember, you have to disconnected one of the power steering lines 'pointing towards the front of the car', use a 3/4 in rubber hose and connect it while having a drain pan. Turn the car on while having the reservoir full and begin to make full left/right turns so that it shoots out all of the old fluid. Do this until its all out. I might have to get a new power steering cap or the pump itself due to the pump being covered in a thin cap of dirty power steering fluid. "Shrugs" This is getting expensive man.

I'm just waiting on the remainder parts so I can finally take the old rack and post up the pictures so we can clarify this misunderstanding.

I can answer that. Yes..everything you said is correct but how I do it (flush my PS) is to remove the PS hose at the cooler. I then turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to push out as much fluid as possible.

afterward, I top of the fluid to the max. I then turn my steering weel from lock to lock. check my fluid level one more time and then I turn on my car and start turning the wheel from lock to lock to help remove the air bubbles.

bleeding the PS system is like 1000000x easier than bleeding our coolant. even my cat can bleed the PS

hey did you install the ZHP Rack yet? I am about to order one from the rack doctor.

also...does this steering rack comes with a complete tie rod or just the lower portion. also, how much did you pay since you didn;t have a ZHP rack for a core return.

thanks buddy

Comes with the inner tie rods, but not outer.
