What do people mean when theyalk about how quicker a steering rack is ?

I want to upgrade my rack cuz my steering seems to light. I like the harder feel of the steering found on the e9x

thanks buddy
What Zell said. I paid $270 for the rack. I've been replacing as much as I can on the car due to crappy maintenance from the po, so I haven't been able to replace the rack yet. I'm really excited to swap it out but the other maintenance issues have delayed it. While I was under the car I've taken a look to see what needs to be done, and really, it looks fairly easy. I really think $270's an awesome price for a rack, especially a 712. As mentioned above, it came with the inner tie rods and what not, so I have to purchase the outer tie rods, hoses ( I believe one of the hydraulic hoses goes from the pump to the rack and the other pump to reservoir), some ATF fluid, a 3/8 rubber hose to take all the crappy fluid out and I'm good to go.

The steering is supposed to be quicker, but the turn ratio is the same. It's mainly the internals that differ. Mainly, the torsion bar inside of the 712 rack. Read this-->

no she has a 323i, so she has a 15.5:1 ratio rack standard. so a 13.7:1 would be an improvement. but yes the .712 internals are said to be different and not as much a boosted feel as other 13.7:1 ratio rack and pinions

I'd be curious too, Flash but I think BMW tuned these cars the way they did on purpose--high speed driving. I may be wrong but I would not want go-kart steering at higher speeds. I'm sure TerraPhntm might have some insight on this.

Ordered the 712 "ZHP" rack from the rack doctor and put on on my 323. It was a significant improvement over what I had, which was, I admit, pretty old. I had a 323 core and Rich gave me $50 return core for it. I did steering guibo, hoses, outer tie rods, and reservoir, so I can't compare a new 323 rack to the 712 due to the age and failing parts, but in combination with my Luk 20 power pump, the reaction and feel is much improved. Great upgrade!

Now, if I could get my alignement sorted to get rid of the twitchiness...

cheers!

My dads z3 and my e30 feel fine at higher speeds. I think that whole twitchy steering at high speeds is more hype than fact. It honestly feels the same as my e46 at speed but feels significantly better at slow speeds. If I had my way I'd have a z3 rack on every car I own. It's really sweet.
(My e30 has the z3 rack FYI)

no, no. you're missing the point. of course those racks in their respective chassis/bodies/suspension setups feel great. they were designed for those particular applications.

we don't know the effect the control arm geometry and the rest of the car has with the steering rack and how it all comes together. don't forget wheelbase, weight, and a bajillion of other factors as well.

Alright guys, the time has come. I'm headed to go replace this rack & pinion right now. I know it's been a while, my bad. As soon as it comes out today, ill post pictures of it so we can see if it came with the 712 rack.

The rack is in ! The rack on the car is a TRW ! 712's an improvement ! Now I just have to correct the alignment fin with the guibo to the correct position.

Interesting. Your car had a TSW. So some 330s 02+ had TSW. I'm glad you're happy with the upgrade!

I won't say anything else, to make sure that Mango doesn't have a heart attack and or rip my head off.

When I did my guibo, I tightened down each bolt to 14 ft/lbs as per Bentley. But that seems so loose! I did of course use blue threadlocker on them, but why is that torque so low?

You upgraded, or replaced the guibo? After breaking so many bolts & nuts throughout my years in the shop, I have gotten used to tightening by touch/feel. I can distinguish the proper amount of tightening needed for certain applications. Now do keep in mind that "those certain" applications such as engine internals, require specific ft/lbs and in a precise order to seal right, so i know when it's required. I just don't bother on the smaller things like this. Let the flamin commence.

The guibo aligning sucks. Good job getting it in though.

I'm just new new guy on the block here, but I'm guessing that EDM's rack had to have been swapped previously........

BTW, where is the :stirpot: emoticon? LOL
