I took everything apart and I found out the expansion tank popped off and the upper radiator hose got loose? I have spent from 4 till now trying to fit the tank properly, but no luck. Anyone have the same problem? Now in the following pic the small piece on the left "with the black cap" is missing the two little clips that hold it in place; so does that matter ? Or as long it's in place? What am I doing wrong?

This x1000.

The bit you are looking at is a broken Auto Transmission Thermostat.
Check out my thread Lucky Escape and especially the video of the said thermostat.

You need to replace this bit for sure. It won;t stop your leak though, that is somewhere else.

The clip that holds it is the only part broken; the piece still looks good. How does the clip hurt it?

Edit, nevermind. Nice work finding problem. Keep looking! Could be crack in tank? Have you throughly examined it out of the car?

Get some radiator hose lube. It's at the counter at Autozone. It works wonders for pressing the ET onto the bracket. It also works pretty good on the water pump o-ring.

After looking into this I find out it's the thermostat on the expansion tank mount bracket that went bad. I spoke to a ASE certified expert friend of mine and it turns out that with a bad thermostat not seating In correctly the tank will never seat nor will it stop leaking! I bought everything I need hoses etc. I also bought bmw's high performance motor oil and filter--ironically it's cheaper than autozone or o'reilly ? The heck? So I bought it and spent 240 for everything..more wallet.

I now know Bimmers are a "replace everything" or it won't work car, lol. If we all had the money to replace everything, we would.

I probably wouldn't bother with a BMW if you don't have the money to maintain it properly. The consequences of an overheat are pretty serious. Then you really won't have any money.

The cooling system is the biggest thing. The other stuff is small/can wait a while.

Did you have much trouble pulling out the old Auto Thermostat? Mine was a PITA to get out.
All the bits just crumbled except the bottom bit that wouldn't budge.

Congrats ...

It wasn't too bad. At first, I thought it was going to be annoying taking it out since it was coming out in pieces, but then I stuck needle nose pliers at the bottom of the thermostat and pushed up, popped right out.
