With the 330 6MT transmission, flywheel, clutch, and a 325 SMG driveshaft, it would be plug and play.

Six sounds sexier, but it's really only a five with overdrive. So the question becomes why would you go to all that trouble just for overdrive? Only purpose is to reduce revs for noise and mileage. Not worth it in my book.

What I am thinking is exactley that. Less revs rolling down the hwy at cruise, a bit better miles/gal.

But then I get to wondering what the final drive ratio is on a stock 325i with the 5 speed vs. the 6 speed final drive.

What kind of rpm are those of you running at 60mph with a manual 6 and 17 inch wheels?

I'll answer for the digitally disadvantaged. First of all the diff is different depending upon whether or not you have a manual or automatic trans.
I'll attempt to attach the new car brochure for my '04 model year here. It shows that the diff was different for the 325 vs. the 330 and between each for the trans type. You'll see the 325 with auto did come with the 3.46 diff. Some on this board have swapped diffs, so not only the 325's are running this high ratio rear end.
I might have brochures for other years, but one I looked at did not detail the diff ratios. Does what is posted here answer enough of your question?

Yeah, thanks. I was just curious where that guy above got his 3.46, so you answered it.

Is it safe to assume that, generally, most automatics will have a HIGHER rear end ratio than manuals (again, generally)?

By the way, the 3rd picture in the brochure is awweesomee.

I thought top gear in all gearboxes was 1:1 and that BMW just used lower numerical differentials to lower the RPMs for better MPG. If not, what was the ratio for 6th gear?

0.85:1 on the GS6-37BZ, 0.83:1 on the S6S-420G

Yes, most manufacturers put in a lower ratio diff to make less torque strain on the automatic trans.

High RPM = more power
higher rpms mean more stress on your engine, and poor fuel economy.

Didn't come like that stock. Unless you're counting reverse as a speed

How often do you drive on the highway?

Besides, the whole point of having multiple gears is so that you can enjoy the reduced wear and improved economy when you don't need the extra power. When you do need the power, all you need to do is shift down.

Learn how to interpret posts correctly!
He does not list his location, so for the sake of argument, let's assume he resides in Armenia. Probably was an option for touring due to the high cost of petrol from neighboring Iran.

It wasn't an option anywhere on any 325. Unless you count SMG... and that wasn't available in 2001 anyway.

So I stand by my statement. How about you learn to research correctly before calling someone out?
