Need speaker reccomendations and opinions for a 2DR H/K tweeter/midrange refresh
Hello ICE forum! I'm new to these parts!
So I bought my car with alot of aftermarket stereo stuff. It currently has custom mounted MB Quart 50mm tweeters in the location where the stock H/K system had a 2.5" midrange and a 25mm tweeter: ![]() I want to change this because I'm lacking alot of mids. I've bumped up the mids in my EQ alot, but I feel this speaker is really important. Mainly I can't hear guitars and vocals sound very thin. My current plan is to buy an OEM set of midrange/tweeter and the felt grill's and drop some nice components in there. Yeah, it's gonna be a bit of a project. I think I can do better than the BSW alternative. For the 25mm tweeters I was thinking about using these because their frequency range is pretty decent. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500PS11...TW.html?tp=107 For the midrange speakers, I'm really lost. I've tried alot of retailers and big name brands and I can't seem to find any options at all. I was hoping you guys might know where I could shop for some 2.5" or ~63.5mm mid range speakers. Once I find some, I can try to match my tweeters to them I guess. So, thoughts or suggestions? CLIFFS: Please reccomend some 1" tweeters and 2.5" mid range's for a custom H/K replacement job on a coupe. Last edited by Andy2108; 11-27-2012 at 05:24 PM. |

hmm, don't you have mids in the lower part of the doors? any tweeters and 2.5" mids you put in that door handle pod are going to sound thin anyway, when compared to the much larger mid that should be located in the lower part of the doors.
i would just replace the whole door handle pods put the tweeters behind the cloth. well maybe go with new tweeters as you'll probably ruin those trying to get them out. and go with 5.25 (easier) or 6.5s in the door panels i have some new 5.25" boston mids and tweets possibly for sale. (2-pairs NIB) I was originally going to go with 6.5s and 5.25s front and back, but it would require a lot of fiberglassing to get the extra speakers in the doors and with all that work, it probably wouldn't look so great, plus i'm lazy, thus the extra stuff. |

There are some aftermarket speakers down there. I'm not sure what they are exactly, but they are putting out a fair bit of bass.

Looks pretty stock to me: http://i.imgur.com/UuRN8.jpg
Sorry about the weird link. Imgur is being a biatch I guess it's possible that the head unit is powering some speakers too. It gets quite warm sometimes. Its an old eclipse unit with navigation. Single din with pop up Screen. Its an Eclipse AVN7000. |

I listened to my lower door speakers. They're definitely mid-bass speakers.

Andy, that looks like a stock amp. No way will that drive MB quart components to their real potential. The answer here is not new speakers. It's power. You should look into an amplifier that will do it justice. Seriously, look into a small powerful class D amp that will fit into the factory location. Never know its even there. JL makes a couple, Rockford Fosgate too. I have a Kenwood Excelon 5-channel that just rocks, and its tiny. If you decide you need more after that, maybe change the speakers, but I doubt it. MB Quarts are a little lacking in the mids, but still far superior to the stock or HK stuff these cars come with. If you really want mids the Hertz components I told you about in my F/S post will deliver that in spades. I would try to amp your current very nice components first though. Just my 2 cents. If you really need more mid bass later, look at the Hertz Hi-Energy HSK-165 system. Fits right in. Will blow you away.

Bass isn't the problem. I have a BSW 210 box with the 600 watt amp.
I guess I should figure out if those tweeters are being powered by the amp or the head unit. |

Probably the best starting point. It would be interesting to know if the MB Quart's upfront are a true component set as well. If so there should be a crossover for each side wired in somewhere. You may be able to adjust the frenquencies reaching those tweeters and larger door mids more to your liking if there is. Just a thought.

I doubt it, even though this car was sponsored by MB Quart when it was a show car, the mid bass down in the doors and on the deck all looked like not-mb-quart-quality. Their frame's are painted blue, and that's all I remember about them.

Hmm. Seems a little odd to mix and match them. No wonder it sounds thin if its not a matched set. I suppose if I were in your shoes right now I would be tempted to pull things apart a little bit to get a better understanding of how it's all wired, powered and what you have to work with.

yeah but I'm hesitant to pull the door cards off. I may start disconnecting things from either the back of the amp or the head unit to see what powers what.

Very few speakers if any will have enough room behind the door to actually provide you any midbass. You can check out what I did here:
