Military Surplus Ammo?
Is military surplus ammo worth the price? I was thinking of buying some surplus to shoot at the range with my AR.
Thoughts? |

Depends on the surplus. For the most part - yes. You'll be getting a nice deal. I haven't really seen much in ways of mil surplus lately on 5.56. Seems like most of it has been 5.45 x39. I do remember where there seemed to be an abundance of prvi green tip floating around for pretty cheap. I wish I had bought moar.

Surplus is sort of dependent upon what caliber you are buying.
If you are looking for 5.56, most of what you will be buying isn't surplus anymore. It's new manufacture for commercial sales. If you opt to buy any M855/SS109 "green tip", be certain that it is allowed where you shoot. Penetrator ammo is usually not allowed at indoor ranges, or outdoor ranges with steel reactive targets.

note that due to the casing construction and how the primers are fitted, surplus military stuff can be tougher to reload than civilian stuff. If you reload your brass, this matters.
If you don't, shoot away.

I buy 7.62x39 surplus but not .223 or 5.56.
Just my personal preference.

No reloading for me, I'm just looking for decently priced range ammo for the AK. I found 1000 rounds of WPA online, not the best stuff but for 220.00 shipped who cares.

It's difficult to reload 7.62x39 anyways because there is very little brass case ammo available for it, and the bulk brass is hard to come by.
Reloading isn't always for expensive rounds. If you shoot a high volume of ammunition, it also helps quite a bit once you break even on the costs of a quality progressive press and equipment.
