'3mo of salary' is an outdated concept, you don't need to spend that much to find a nice stone. as long as she likes it, thats the only thing that matters.

diamonds are so common they really don't have value, DeBeers is a cartel that artifically creates a shortage in the market. Any woman who cares about how much you wasted on one is not worth marrying imho.

For diamonds... no joke.. pawn shop. Find a guy you can trust and have him disassemble an old ring and reuse the stones. Will cost a fraction of what it would to buy something "new" and will be far nicer.

Smart Chase. I'm surprised you would suggest a used plebian store.

How can someone who is not well versed in diamond appraisal ever buy something from a pawn shop and be certain it is even a real diamond?

For the hassel it causes, wouldn't even bother with a pawn shop....you gotta drive around to pawn shops and find a ring, then you have to buy it (having no idea the certifications or if its real HUGE MINUS), then you have to find a jeweler, and yada yada yada...crap idea.

might custom design though...
I get gaurenteed color, clarity, cut, and all with a pretty certification picture + warrenty ect.

Many pawn shop owners are versed in jewlery builds. My cousin bought his wife's ring from a pawn shop where they knew the owner... the guy broke down an old diamond ring, took out the precious stones, melted down the metal, and hand crafted a gorgeous setting. To each their own but his ring was appraised at 7 times what he paid for it.
