Key fob does't start car but opens the door.

Hi Guys I have 2 keys. One key opens doors only but does't start car whereas the other starts the car. Previously both keys would start the car. Both are master keys from the bmw.
How can I repair it to start my car? I have reprogrammed it but still not working.

The key that doesn't start the car was probably not used for a while and ran out of battery. This happened when i bought my car from BMW and they ended up sending me a new key. Your best option is to try the battery replacement DIY.

Hopefully I'm not too late

The battery has nothing to do with the immobiliser transponder. That's an entirely passive device.

@OP: If the key is on a fob with a load of other keys, try it on its own - the extra metal can confuse the induction system.

Otherwise you need to run DIS to read the security module (EWS, IIRC) to see if it's lost coding for the key (and if necessary, reset it.)

Can you explain this last part with the DIS clearly?

I have a key like the OP, unlocks car and all just can't start the car with it. I tried swapping guts etc and still wasn't able start so its something with the transponder.

Now you say I can check in DIS where exactly can I find this in DIS? And what do I need to check?

Well. 6 months after my key quit working all together and about 10 months after it quit unlocking the car, this thread revived my key!

Thanks!
