My Ride: 330d tourer e46
Loss of gears

Hi. I'm a new member to this site. Hoping someone can help me please, I was driving along in my e46 330d auto tourer when I relised my revs where higher than normal for the speed I was traveling so I pulled into a car park and drove around for abit finding I was at crawling pace but revs were very high as if I was slipping the clutch I then totally lost motion so I rolled into a car space and left the car for about an hour. When I returned the gears all seemed normal. I decided to drive home but 2 miles up the road I had the same problem, total gear loss but this time a strong smell of burnt gear oil. I got recovered home and my lovely 330d is just sitting here now unusable. Can anyone help? Have a knackard the gearbox or would and oil and filter change fix this? Hope to hear from someone soon.
