Unhappy What to replace first on a just bought used e46?

I bought a 01 330i (110K) last month to start a fresh year and it was really clean inside and out.

First week of having the car.. Service Engine Soon light lit up and so I had my friend pull the code out and it said P0171 and P0174. I searched around here and most people are pointing at the elbow boot on the intake. The car was running smooth, no decrease in power and such. So I thought I should be fine for a while 'til I get the parts I needed.

2 weeks later and I finally bought the elbow boot. Worked on it and it was just a bitch to take off that I decided to do it next week.

So the week of changing the elbow boot.. I decided to go on a date before replacing the boot since I was feeling really good with having a nice car

On my way to pick up my date and really excited about 5 mins of driving I started seeing smoke from both side of the hood and my immediate thought was that it was really windy but then the temp gauge was at 3/4 way to the right. I quickly parked my car and I was just speechless and felt really cold that all this was happening on my first date of the year

Turned off the car immediately and just stared at my hood smoked itself out. I was so frustrated that I just tilted my seat all the way back and just laid down there for like 15 mins. to calm down I got up and the car was still smoking. I looked under the car and saw a big puddle of my coolant. Found me some water and the bitch just went straight down to the floor.

My house wasn't very far so I let it cool down for like 2 hours and drove it home. Temp gauge didn't reach the red line. I took it apart and found this.

My expansion tank just totally decided to give up

Sorry for the long story. I just had to get it out.
Suggestions as what to do next will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Damn man, sorry to hear about the problems that just came up.

I would replace the entire cooling system and both those intake boots for now.

You just found one of the most common failures on the e46. Lot's of people do a full cooling system overhaul (ET, Hoses, and Water Pump) as a preventative maintenance.

Then there is the AT Fluid argument.... since you are asking what to do next.

Something you should replace pre-emptivly:

Water pump
Thermostat
Upper & lower hose
Belts
Tensioners
Expansion tank
LCAB

If you buy the parts ahead of time from less expensive sources and keep on hand, it makes your repairs that much more rewarding.

I just bought a 01 myself and in the middle of working on it. Found the throttle body "y" boot with a finger sized hole it it and the one fwd of that is brittle so I ordered them both...should be here in acouple of days.
I removed my intake as well because of a lot of oil on engine and found the engine breathe tube was severed in half so replaced that as well.
All rubber hose is being replaced as well.
Wondering since I'm in there if I should remove and check the starter....we'll see.

replace et, fill with water and bleed, make sure it doesn't leak, drain water and fill with 50/50 coolant mix. Replace intake boot, done. Smash girl.

I'm pretty sure Mango knows more about the e46 than g-d.

I remember the preventative/preventive debate...forget which one is a word and I'm too lazy to look.

OP, Mango isn't medicated as far as we know...which is a great testament to him, no doubt.

Haha well turns out both words are commonly accepted (preventive vs. preventative)

Is there really a difference? Other than the addition of two letters?
