They'll never beat Wrath of Khan, but these new ones are pretty sweet.

Who the heck could the villain be? I have returned??

Seriously? You can tell how well I keep up with the series lately...

God, part of me hopes it's not him. Khan was just about perfection in WoK.

And it can't be...Kirk's the one who banishes him and the Botany Bay to C.Alpha 5 in TOS. How could Khan return and have a grudge against Kirk if Kirk literally just got command of the Enterprise?

Different timeline remember? That's the do anything trump card for this series.

Yeah, that's true and I guess that's how they might explain it through some quirk plot twist. Still, if we were to look at the events that took place in the first new one and analyze them regarding their effects, we would see them limited to the destruction of vulcan, the realization of trans-warp beaming, and possibility of time travel via temporal disturbance or black hole.

If we limit it to these effects, which really seem to be the only apparent ones, Khan should still be floating through space on his ship in cryogenic freeze. Someone still has to run into him, wake him up, lose, and then Khan would have to get some pretty powerful technology to come back and fvck up Earth.

Now, I suppose it's possible that this movie would take place after the first "5 year mission" during which time Kirk did intercept Khan, lose the Enterprise, take back the Enterprise, and then exile them. Then it would make some sense.

Other opinion from the interwebz (and a screenshot from the trailer) is that it's Gary Mitchell from TOS.

Possible...he certainly would have the power necessary for all this, something Khan inherently lacks. And Delta Vega has already been visited in this timeline (snowy planet where Kirk meets old Spock) so that sorta fits...

I think this is more likely, especially given the fact that Mitchell and Kirk were friends from before. But in order for this to be true, they would have had to already have visited the galactic barrier in order for Mitchell to get all screwed up which would mean that at least a portion of the first 5 year mission is over.

Sweet. Great casting job for the villain. Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) is the man. Going to see a lot more of him in American movies.
