Rolling back your miles. It's Possible

I just witnessed with my own eyes an 2001 e46 m3 with over 100k miles being rolled back to less than 60k miles.

It was done at a independent shop. The tech that did it, whom used to work for a BMW dealership showed me the trick. I was amazed. It seem like you would only need that big portable obd2 reader or whatever to do the works. I believe that computer cost like 5k. Then I asked if the key if itself gets reset or does it see the old miles if the dealership put your key in their cradle. He said no, it would not see the roll back.

The only time when you would get caught.. if you went to the dealership and they logged your miles when you went in for service. And then they see that your current miles is less then what you came in for last time. HAHA..

Anywho thought I wanted to tell you guys that it is possible. I didn't do it, I don't have an e46 any more.

So you're advising us to be shady d-bags? Or is this some off handed shady back ally warning?

(Please pardon my auto-correct)

Welcome to 2001.

People have been pulling this **** for years. Hence, why I'll never feel comfortable buying a second hand car in Los Angeles.

This is the reason why inspections and reviews of the cars service work is important.

I only buy used these days, and one of the things I do is get the cars vin and check with the service shops the owner claims to have had it serviced. Luckily for the cars I've bought, they had full service histories since day one, and could see no mileage discrepancies.

I think its legal to do a rollback on a car as long as its 10+ years old.

you can tell by the amount of rust on the car how much mileage it has up here in Canada.

About a year ago or so a guy in Woodland Hills CA was arrested for providing this kind of "service" - mostly to people who had more miles on their leased car than they paid for.
Rolling back the odometer of a 2001 M3 by about 50K miles is plain stupid: This car should have been smog checked at least three of four times and each time the mileage is reported to DMV.
Even if it was brought in from somewhere they don't do state inspections, a 50K miles worth of wear is not easy to hide.

It is amazing some people would risk a felony on their records to gain what?

carfax is generally annoying garbage that uninformed buyers go by. which is annoying for sellers.

If the mileage gets rolled back and you take your car for smog or sell it, the DMV will also find out, and the car will get labeled for odometer tampering. If you sell the car, you run into some pretty serious trouble.

Also, Carfax is a joke, not for what peytonracer said, but because most accidents simply won't show up. My former car is an excellent example.

I have a '99 328i with only 1,304 miles on it. Fern Green Metallic. Beige leather heated seats...oh baby.

Cost me $35 and just 2 months in local jail.

it goes both ways. accidents don't show up as well as fake reports showing up.
