Question Can you guess that coolant leak? also, I love AAA

So, I was about 20 miles from home when me coolant level indicator comes on. I just filled it earlier in the day. Uh-oh.

Now, note that when I filled it earlier that day, the indicator stick wasn't even floating - coolant was low. I ended up putting too much in as it filled quicker than I thought.
According the off diagram I thought I was maybe just a small amount over the full level. (i.e. meaning filling it to the brim was no big deal. Just like filling a radiator to the brim, or filling a normal expansion tank to the brim and the think would just piss everywhere as it warms.)

Fast forward to night when heading home, I pull over to find the car peeing fluid from around the expansions tank, maybe around mid-way up. Have yet to look at it in daylight. I do know that it would still hold a very, very small amount that then gets sloshed out as you drive.

Fortunately, my lady has AAA Plus, so I used a few of her 100 miles of free towing. Otherwise I would have been paying $250+tax on the spot.

What do my fellow forum browsers think it is?

Those voting for the winning answer (to be determined when I inspect her later) will receive bragging rights of being able to diagnose an E46 cooling issue from a few rambling sentences.

Your Exp. tank had failed and by overfilling it you've dropped it into the grave, 100% guaranteed. Do NOT Drive your vehicle in this condition.

If you have more than 80K+ miles on the odo, then you are over due for a major cooling system overhaul. It is strongly advised that you do this.
Doing it piece meal will just cause you more aggravation and expense.

If you have any automatic, you may need to replace the ATT (Auto. Trans. Thermostat) housed within the E.T. also.

Lastly, this is most important.. After any cooling system work, you must BLEED the system to prevent overheating.

I don't get how people miss that thread. Even with it stickied, there's cooling system threads almost every day...
Damned if we do, no fun if we don't.
