Line two basically states that if you can do without something, let someone less fortunate have it. I see absolutely nothing wrong with either of the two, seems like a nice and moral thing to do, regardless of religion.

Way to rub it in everyone's face that you're going to super heaven. I'm hoping when I get there that I can use my Silver status on United to upgrade.

If you have an Amex card I think it's worth triple halo points.

Yea but I think Sapphire has better travel rewards. I'm not paying the $450 annual fee on the Platinum, even if I already am pre-approved.

I give plenty of charity. The government is not charity.

I have a platinum. Saved me $600 on my trip that's coming to Montreal alone. Worth every penny.

I neither spend nor travel enough to warrant the card. And from everything I have read from AMEX owners only chumps get the Platinum. The same rewards can be had with the Gold.

Not a single perk I just got would be available with gold. Not a single perk I use for airlines/airports is available with gold. Almost every perk that makes the platinum card "platinum" is not available with gold. As for your situation, fair enough. The card is only worth it if you travel.

How so? I'm curious because I've been thinking about looking at an Amex card for travel because my BofA card blows big time.

I booked through their travel service (just make my life easier.) With the platinum, I get an automatic upgrade to the next room category (in this case, the Fairmont gold floor), late check out, and since I am staying 6 nights, 2 nights are free. In vegas the platinum rate for a room in the Venetian was a good deal lower. In room breakfast, which normally costs $50 PER PERSON PER DAY (I stayed for a week) is paid for by Amex. Wife got $200 worth of spa treatments and crap as well. I just got back from Israel. Amex also eats $200 a year for airline incidental fees (overweight bags, extra bags, upgrades, onboard dining, phone calls, movies, etc.) On the Israel trip alone, I used all $200 of it. In a normal year, I buy back the annual fee at LEAST 3 times over. I save a fortune by renting cars and using Amex platinum insurance. They cover everything, for 41 days, for $10. If you get insurance from the car rental place, it's closer to $15....PER DAY. I also have platinum insurance for my luggage, which has a slew of perks on its own. Again, if you travel, it's worth every penny. If you don't, gold is plenty.

Just to add, there are some perks I do not always use, and some I can't afford to. For instance, if you google Amex fine hotels and resorts, you will see that they guarantee $450 in perks with every stay..the catch? You need to be able to afford to stay at these hotels, which sometimes, I can't. Another perk is the companion ticket. If you buy a first class ticket, Amex gives you one for free for your friend. I can't afford to fly first class, but if I could, that's a pretty sizable perk.

![]() People who have the Platinum don't mind the annual fee because the annual fee is a drop in the bucket for them. Even if they didn't travel often, I'm sure they like the idea that they can take advantage of perks in the event they do.
