Amazon.com will ship a 1,509 lb. gun safe for... free?

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/busin...rly-ton/59427/

Quote:

You know how Amazon has that "Super Saver" option that promises free shipping on pretty much anything you buy if you're willing to wait, like, six weeks for it to arrive? They're not kidding. On Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal's Marketwatch set out to see just how far Amazon's commitment to free shipping would stretch. Turns out, it'll stretch pretty far.

Based on the published shipping and handing guidelines, the heaviest thing that Amazon will ship for free is the six-foot-tall Cannon Safe CO54 Commander Series Premium 90 Minute Fire Safe. It'll hold 48 guns, comes with 13 locking bolts and costs a cool $3,486.57. And if you select that "Super Saver" shipping option or paid the $79 annual membership fee for Amazon Prime, it won't cost you a penny to have it shipped to your front door. It weighs 1,509 pounds, by the way. (It's actually 1,672 pounds with all the packing materials.) Your FedEx guy, by the way, may or may not hate forever you if you order one.

If you think this sounds like a money-losing proposition, you're right. Cannon, the safe company, says that it charges $700 to ship its massive flagship safe, and considering all of the other heavy items in Amazon's inventory that qualify for "Super Saver" shipping, the costs add up for the online retailer. Amazon reported a $636 million loss on shipping costs alone last quarter, which boils down to a 1 percent loss per item. It's also no cake walk for the Amazon workers who have actually have to box this stuff up in the warehouse.

Don't go feeling sorry for Amazon, though. The company is chin deep in innovating its shopping experience and insists that shipping cost and inconvenience will soon be an afterthought for shoppers and investors alike. They're even starting to offer same day delivery on some items, although that will cost you. Think of it this way: For every crazy shopper who orders a 1,700-pound safe with the "Super Saver" shipping options, there are probably a thousand other shoppers who will pay twice as much to get their used copy of 50 Shades of Grey delivered a day sooner. Amazon executives insist that it all works out in the end. In the words of CEO Jeff Bezos, "It's not like we didn’t do some arithmetic ahead of time."

It obviously doesn't come UPS and isn't 2 day shipping, they actually use a freight company to deliver large items like this and TVs. They will call to work out a delivery time and will set it up whereever you want. Works out awesome!

Regardless of the shipping method you choose, it will ship via a freight company like CEVA. I bought my Cannon Patriot P40 safe off of Amazon and shipping was "free".

Whenever I investigated getting a safe delivered from Amazon there was a giant disclaimer on the bottom that said "WILL DELIVER TO CURB ONLY" meaning that they would basically throw it in front of your house and that was the extent of the delivery. This leaves the purchaser with the responsibility of getting the thing in the house.

Of course, this was several years ago, so things may have changed.

I believe Jeff was told 'deliver to curb only' by lowes as well, but when they got there with the safe they said it was their responsibility to take it anywhere in the house. Regardless if you tip the delivery people well I'm sure they will take it anywhere you want.

Actually its like 37 lbs.

Here is a story for ya Amazon lovers. I got my water, and two leaked in the box. They were wrapped in a plastic bag (because of other items in the box.) So 52 of 54 boxes of water arrived safely.

I emailed amazon, I they sent me 2 more 27 packs of water for free for my trouble. Yes, 54 more boxes of water including shipping for free.

TIP: Order water separate because two packs equal $30 for free shipping so there is no reason to have anything else in the box.

I just order two more cases and they came in a much smaller box with no leaking. The original box allowed them to bounce around way too much (like 4x the size of the waters.)

So... $60 for 160 boxes of water delivered!

That is over a week's worth of water for me, my wife, and my animals for $60!

I am a customer for life.

Btw - the water taste fine and is purified, sterilized, etc and stores for a minimum of 5 years.

As far as the link...

Looks like Amazon is now charging shipping for that safe. They're charging $1143.21 for shipping now.
But if you're looking to get a good deal on shipping from Amazon, get this wide belt sander...

http://www.amazon.com/W1756-43-Inch-...cr_dp_asin_lnk

... free shipping on something that weighs 3,955 lbs. Of course, you're paying $16,899 for the sander.
