Panetta denies Medal of Honor for Marine who dived on grenade

Please read the full story:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...renade/?page=1

Quote:
Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta has denied the request to give Sgt. Rafael Peralta the Medal of Honor, saying there are still too many questions to accept that he knowingly scooped a grenade beneath himself to absorb its blast and save his fellow Marines.

The Pentagon informed Peralta’s family Wednesday morning of the denial, eight years after he was killed in Fallujah, Iraq, and four years after then-Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates denied an initial bid to award Peralta the military’s top honor despite eyewitness reports from his platoon that he saved their lives.

If this is 100% of the truth and nothing but the truth, it's shameful.

However I doubt this is anywhere close to the whole truth.

Hmm... from your article and this one it looks like the officials believe that other Marines may have tossed the grenade under his body?

Quote:
The Pentagon told Rep. Duncan Hunter it supports the decision of former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who honored Sgt. Rafael Peralta with the Navy Cross instead of the military's highest honor.

Peralta was not conscious when his body smothered a grenade in Iraq in 2004, saving the lives of other Marines, Gates ruled in 2008.

The case was reopened this year after Hunter obtained a video of the battle action and a new forensics report. The lawmaker said the new evidence proved Peralta's actions were intentional.

But defense officials found the new evidence was not sufficient to change the decision, said Joe Kasper, Hunter's spokesman.

Peralta was under consideration for the Medal of Honor four years ago, but the Pentagon questioned the reliability of eyewitnesses, who said Peralta scooped the grenade under him but disagreed about details such as which hand he used.

The Pentagon also pointed to autopsy data that suggested he was likely dead, and probably blinded, from a friendly-fire gunshot wound to the head and thus could not have voluntarily scooped the grenade toward himself.

They don't hand out MOHs just for regular heroics. It takes something truly amazing to earn an MOH instead of the Navy Cross that Peralta has already been awarded. Unless they can be sure that he voluntarily pulled the grenade underneath himself, it's going to be tough for them to consider his actions MOH-level.
