I would not come to any conclusion based on an opinion from a friend traveling on a public road behind you. See for yourself.

...although...OP could confirm it by having someone else start it after it's cooled down a bit...like in the a.m.

If you have coolant leaking into cylinders, like I did in my e36, you'll notice it worse when starting in a.m. It'll sputter until it burns off...then the amount leaking is so slight, it's not noticeable...until it gets worse and worse. There are many different fractures possible that can lead to this...just the gasket or in the head (as happened to me).

OMG Doug don't say that

My E46 sputters at cold start, but only when cold. When the weather was pretty warm few weeks ago, it started right up perfectly(hit 1400rpm at start up). And OBD is throwing P0101, MAF malfunction, so I guess this POS MAF has gone bad already(35k miles).

Interrogative, did your E36 have exactly same symptom as mine? Hot upper/cold lower&radiator, overheating under load(drive), and coolant overflow?
And what kind of tests did you perform in order to determine head failure? Compression test, combustion leak test(blue fluid), etc?

I just had a cold start sputtering...loss of coolant (maybe 1-3 ozs (at the end)). This happened after a substantial overheat and radiator neck blowing apart at the end...before I knew anything about cars!

In the end, I don't know what tests the shop did, but they showed me the cracked head.

I wasn't overheating, but I wasn't losing a lot of coolant either and kept it topped up. I went for a few months until I knew it was something serious. Then, 6 months after the work was done, some idiot totaled my car! sigh

Ha! Surprisingly, it's both very little and more than most!

Well, I have come to a conclusion. I've checked dipstick dozen times before, it did not have chocolate milkshake. It does now, for some reason.
Definitely head/HG is blown, but I don't know what to do next.
a) Sold as-is and get another one? A friend of mine is selling his 02 330i w/ Mtech1 for $4500. But the problem is, I don't know how much I could get with my e46. It has a lot of new engine/cooling system parts, new suspension parts, etc etc.
b) Swap the engine? I found a 328 engine with transmission for $1800(or $1k for engine, $500 for 5spd stick swap), but plus labor($700, found an indy mechanic)..I'm not sure it's worthy at all.

Glad you have reached a final conclusion

You now have a tough decision to make

Have you considered parting out the car instead? You are more likely to get your money for the new parts that way. Then use the proceeds to get a new car. My 2 c.

So sorry to hear this was the conclusion after all you tried. I read all thru this thread for a few hours anxiously wondering what the cause would be, since I also have an overheating problem. Mine has never gone into the red yet.

What did you end up doing with the car?
