Low-Light + Dog + Christmas Tree

I was bored, so I pulled out the 3100 and 35mm to take some shots of the doggie in-front of the Christmas Tree. Of course the 3100 is ISO limited, so I bumped up to 800 and went all the way to f/1.8.

It was difficult, given the room has little to no light available (only spotlights and lamps) and of course I have a chocolate lab.

Anyways, C&C needed. LR was used to bump the lighting on the dogs faces, and tried to maintain that "spot-light" type on the face. Focal point was at the eyes.

Here is a tip I got while watching Jared Polin video that can be applied here. Once you have your Aperture set, try using different shutter speeds and see which you like best. Maybe 1/60 instead of 1/20. Plus you can bump up the ISO more too.

If your room was lit enough to see the dogs with the naked eye, you could have shot around f/4 or f/2.8.


I like no.1 and 2. On no.2 maybe put the AF on the dog's eye so that it would be sharp. Since you used f/1.8 your subject would be less out of focus.

the lighting and overall colors are not flattering for your dogs

I have my WB set to auto.

Only way is by using a white balance card, or better yet shooting in RAW and just change the WB when processing.

and turn down saturation or vibrance (specifically for the red channel) a tiny bit and your lights won't be so harsh (hard edged glow around the lights)

Okay, good to know.

I'll get the file back open for some re-edit.

I was thinking it was your shutter speed and not the white balance.

Try some of these tips. Don't mind that it's Canon. Go to where they starting talking about High ISO.
