NY newspaper uses FOIA, publishes map, names, addresses of gun permit holders

In Oregon they passed a law that said that the police can't turn over that information without your permission. The local Sheriff sent out a form that basically said "check this box if you want us to give out your information".

It may be within their right, but as journalists they are supposed to have a certain line they don't cross. Just like publishing the names and addresses of important witnesses, judges, law enforcement, etc. in trials or the addresses of grieving victims of a tragedy like Sandy Hook. This lacks moral and ethical integrity. There's no reason these people should have been targeted by the newspaper; they are law-abiding citizens who pose absolutely no threat to the safety of their neighborhoods. At the very least, there's zero evidence to say otherwise.

This now makes their homes targets for vandalism and burglary for those looking for firearms or those anger about Sandy Hook, etc. It also places them in a public spotlight where morons will ridicule them or threaten them. And it also endangers those households which aren't on the list because criminals have a little more confidence a weapon isn't present in the home.

Guns are valuable property. Just like expensive jewelery or electronics, their owners don't want everyone knowing what they have because it makes them a target. The registration information that they managed to get a hold of through the FOI Act should have been sealed, except to LEO. The State takes this information not for the benefit of the public, but for LE agencies and their affiliates. Not only that, but some firearms insurance companies that provide both property and liability coverage will refuse to insure or drastically raise the rates, based on the peril in which the weapons lie. This information being broadcast so publicly increases that risk to insurers and the insured, thus potentially raising the costs.

Bottom line: it's ridiculous. Its a blatant violation of journalistic code and all ethics or morals. They rightly deserve the backlash they're receiving.

As would be printing all that information for every police officer, judge, jury member, and witness involved in a high-profile case. Or printing the same for owners of security systems, dogs with current rabies vaccinations, or people receiving welfare checks.

Why did they selectively execute their right in this situation, but not for all the others? Why did it take someone else to publish the personal information for the leadership of the newspaper? If they're son interested in the public's right to know, they should want people to know everything, right?

Journal News gun permit map used by burglars to target White Plains home?



A White Plains residence pinpointed on a controversial handgun permit database was burglarized Saturday, and the burglars' target was the homeowner's gun safe.

At least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday but were unsuccessful in an attempt to open the safe, which contained legally owned weapons, according to a law enforcement source. One suspect was taken into custody, the source said.
The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues.


"The police are doing a full investigation," the man saidthrough a partially opened front door.
There was broken glass in the backyard Sunday and a ladder leading up to a second-story window. Neighbors on the street of modest, Colonial homes said they had heard about the burglary.

The homeowner's name and address were included recently on the controversial interactive map of gun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties published on The Journal News' website.
Neighbor John Mascia said he thought the gun permit database should not have been published.

"I could [not] care less what they have in their home," Mascia said.
Police are investigating what role, if any, the database played in the burglars' decision to target the home, the law enforcement source said.
White Plains police Lt. Eric Fischer confirmed that a burglary occurred but would not release further information Sunday.

The Journal News has been the target of sharp criticism from gun rights advocates and some media ethicists since running the story and interactive map Dec. 23. The story was published 10 days after the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting that claimed the lives of 20 young children and seven adults.

A call for comment to The Journal News was not immediately returned.
Although some good-government groups have come to the defense of the White Plains-based newspaper, some elected officials, including State Sen. Greg Ball (R-Patterson, have complained the permit map could aid criminals.

"If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy but that they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens," Ball said Sunday in a statement.
On Monday, Ball will introduce a third bill into the state Legislature intended to keep the names of those who have gun permits private.

You know what's cute.... If someone where to publish a mailer, hang up posters or a website specifically for sex offenders... They could be in trouble for harassment.

Sex Offenders are offered more protection than gun owners.
