Ok I found a better deal 2005 out of a z4 with 78k miles 1800 for motor and they will install for 800 bucks, they are familiar with install on a 325i. So 2600 bucks installed ready To go.
Does that sound like a good deal

sounds pretty good, just make sure you get some kind of warranty. engines with front end collisions sometimes mess with the engines balance and internals.
it's just good to have incase.

ok so i was thinking, I see alot of these motors for sale and his is the newest and lowest miles for only 1800. wouldnt that be the most expensive? i see some with 130k to 150k selling for 2500 why are they more expensive?
i may have to ask him if the engine is still in the car cuz i want proof of mileage

There are a lot of possible reasons. One may be the people asking $2500 for a 150k-mile motor are on crack, as is anyone paying those prices. Maybe the $1800 guy needs the money and is motivated to make a deal. By all means, check out everything you can to make sure it's legit, including running the VIN by your local law enforcement or title agency. Check out his reputation if possible. Avoid paying up front.

Where in TX are you?

Good luck!

If you have an engine hoist, jackstands, and a decent set of tools, you can do this in a couple of days. you'll have to remove the front bumper cover, bumper, radiator support, power steering lines, a/c lines (of course have an a/c tech evacuate the system), electrical harness and connections, driveshaft, exhaust, and transmission (or just pull out the trans with the engine)

i decided i'm going to let him do it, its a shop that only works on bmw's and mercedez cars. he said they do the swap all the time, he can map the 330i maps for the computer and have it in in a day or two. i looked at the engine its really nice and he guarantees it. I'm taking it in wednesday and hopefully have it back thursday or friday turn key ready to go.

It's at the shop the guy said 5 days or so and it will be ready, the engine I bought looks really clean, they opened it up so I could inspect it.

lol "all the time"

If that's what he said, then he's exaggerating. There is no reason for any shop to be regularly doing this swap. He probably does pull entire motors out regularly, so that is similar enough.

Why would you swap the motor? Instead, do what e46Mango did, get a $500 tune and voila. You'll be pulling 4-10 cars on m3's, gt-r's and well, maybe even the m5, lolol.

Will the 3.0 out of a 330i bolt straight into my 2001 325i? what years are compatible with this swap? any advice?
Thanks
(Note...evidently I didn't read the thread...so this comment is evidently too late...sorry!)

I didn't know that, so I don't know how bad of an issue you have...if you're currently driving or not.

But, often, I hear the advice to begin by trying to see if the head bolts hold torque. If they do, that's a sign the threads are okay and that the pressures weren't such to pull the head off the block.

At this point, especially if you're doing this yourself, I'd test the bolts for torque, and if good, then remove the head and see what's up with the block.

Although some of the work replacing the head might be more challenging than getting a new engine put in, it's a whole lot less expensive.

How bad of an overheating event did you go through, do you know?

Main thing to watch out for with 03.5+ M54s is the MS45 DME. It's not a huge issue, just a few of the sensors will be different. MAF, IAT, and O2 sensors come to mind.

Also I think BMW changed the AC pulley from 5 rib to 4 rib in 2003

I don't know how much it overheated, previous owner must have done that cuz it didnt with me driving. The engine is already pulled, a shop is putting in the 3.0 should be done Thursday I hope, they will mess with all the kinks they come in contact with, we already negotiated a price, 1800 for engine, 800 for install and that is total, they apparently have done the swap and know what has to be replaced to fit along with flashing the DME.

And mango has a 3.0, I doubt my 2.5 would do much with a tune, I'm sure it wasn't running at optimum efficiency either with a cracked head and all that water in my valve cover
