Hey guys, How much would you pay for this stuff?

Like the title says, I would like to know how much this stuff is worth.
The deal is, I bought this today on a whim. I have wanted to get a decent camera and try out amateur photography for a while. I live in a great place that I believe has a lot of great pictures to capture. I am by no means an expert in anything that has to do with cameras, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I just want measurement that my impulse buy is not a terrible one. I firmly believe that worth is based on how much you use something, but just for an idea I want to know that I made a good deal.

Also if you have ANY tips for someone who has never had anything like this, I would appreciate it. I have already read most things in this forum today so I have a few places to start but would still love some help.

The camera is a Canon Rebel EOS XSI 12.2 mp
Lens 1- 18-55mm Canon efs
Lens 2- 75-300mm Canon
Lens 3- 200-400mm Tamron AF LD....?
Tiffen 58mm UV Protector
Targus 58mm Multi Coated Cirular Polarizer HD filter
Lastly it came with 2 batteries a remote controller RC-5

I paid 250 for the lot, and am hoping to start a new bobbie.

My Ride: slower than yours
I don't know that much about Canon but that looks like a good deal to me, lenses are more important than the actual camera.

I'm rusty on my photography knowledge, but I believe you generally want a fast lens (lower f-stop) to allow more light in.. well at least that is what I tended to focus on.

Try picking up a 55mm standard (idk what you call em, but its a fixed lens, similar to human eye) and a low f-stop.

Again, I'm a bit rusty but looks like a good deal.

Good deal.

XSi is about $200-250 by itself
18-55mm is $50
75-300mm is a piece of crap but $100
200-400mm should be at least $200 and as high as $400 if it auto focuses on that camera and is a decently fast lens.

Most would be happy at $400-$500 for all that.

XSi is great starter DSLR

----------

See how the 200-400mm works. If it works well keep it. Sell the 75-300mm or sell them both.

Buy a 50mm f1.8 for around $120 new.
Buy a 70-300mm USM IS for around $300 used if you need a telephoto cheap. (no its not the same, not even close)

List all the numbers and info you can find on the 200-400 (ie f3.5-f5.6, etc.)

Unfortunately, it's also optically horrible. Owned one, and got rid of it almost immediately.

I have no idea how to distinguish this, but thanks for the heads up. I found one selling on ebay for 275 which is more than I spent on the entire deal, so its a possibility that I will sell it just to recoup the money. Before I do that though, i'm going to try it out with a friend that knows quite a bit more about this stuff than I do.

^^ it is reasonably sharp stopped down to f8-f11, but at those apertures, especially at the 400mm end, you need a LOT of light to get reasonably high shutter speeds, so you can avoid blurry shots.

Sell the 200-400mm for $250+
Sell the 75-300mm for $100+

Buy a Canon 70-300mm USM IS for around $300 used if you need a telephoto cheap. (no its not the same, not even close)

You will have close to the same distance telephoto and far superior quality in one lens. You will also have a razor sharp / low light / portrait lens to learn about bokeh on. You already have a walk around lens.

For $300-$350 total you have a $1000+ set up.
