Need help with rough idle and stalling

Alright so the alternator on my 2001 330xi went out last week so I replaced it. After install I tried to start it and it would just turn over but never fire. I searched and read somewhere that if the battery is low it won't start so I charged the battery fully and it started up and then bogged down and died. After a few more tries got the same thing, fires up for a few seconds then dies. I found that if I give it gas after start up I could keep it running. The next day I tried it again and it idles rough but would run by itself. But if I rev the engine up to 3k or higher and let off it bogs down and dies when it gets back to idle. I researched some more and thought it might be the fuel pump since I have 170,000 on what seemed to be the original one. So I changed the fuel pump but it died not fix the problem. Still idles the same but dies if I rev it up and let off. I need help diagnosing this. I've searched but can't figure it out. I went back and retraced all my install steps for the alternator and don't see anything I left unplugged or disconnected. Any suggestion are appreciated. Thanks

Suggest you look at the first 3 links in my signature. You will need to use a computer as you will not see the links on a phone If you replaced the fuel pump, not likely your problem.

I would also assume you have a CEL on as well? What codes are you getting? These will be good clues.

Likely you disturbed the CCV hoses when replacing the alternator?

Also what is the story on the fuel filter.

Use the 3rd link to display the Voltage on the OBC display. This way you can make sure the car is charging properly and not over charging.

I replaced my valeo alternator with a reman bosch from o'reilly auto parts. Could this be the problem? Where exactly is the ccv hose? I'll check out those links as soon i get home. I have the bmw scanner 1.4 and the only errors it is showing are thermal oil level sensor and auc sensor

Went out and read the voltage. Getting 12.5-12.6 with key on and 14.6 with engine running

Not usually, PA Soft is pretty good at showing codes.

You may need to think back where you were when changing the alt and what you may have disturbed.

Throttle connection is very temperamental, however, I doubt you would have been back that far?

OP...sounds like something got disturbed/broken during your replacement. Also, maybe something was not put back correctly like the MAF or maybe air tube to the throttle body/ICV.

EDIT: check all the engine wiring connectors in that general area

I don't think I was back that far. Could it be coincidental camshaft position sensor? Or just an intake air leak? What hoses could i have dosconnected?

I went out today and noticed i have a yellow sludge under my oil cap. Is this related? Please tell me I don't have a cracked head

Probably just condensation. I assume you are not losing coolant as well?

Alright I took it the the mechanic today and he says its the ccv and I have an oil filter housing gasket leak. I had codes for bank 1 and 2 lean and some misfires. Sound right? He quoted roughly $1000 for the job. Does that sound about right?
Would you guys recommend DIY on this? Seems like a PITA

It does sound like your CCV, if it were really bad I suppose it could cause your symptoms but honestly I think something didn't get put back together correctly as far as your air intake goes. 1000 is a little steep, if you can change the alt then you should have no problem with the oil filter housing gasket. If you plan on doing the CCV do it at the same time as the OFHG it will make it so much easier because you will have much more room to work. Its up to you, I would do it myself or get another quote I would be willing to pay 300 for that job, it wasn't fun

$1k is STEEP! Even if you had $250 for parts, this is still $750 labor?? @ $100 per hour this is 7.5 hours. Something does not add up?

$10 says the shop is double dipping on labor? The OFHG being out makes the CCV a much easier job.

Get a written quote and let's see parts & labor breakdown.

After looking at DIY write ups and videos I'm thinking I'm gonna do it. The OFHG seems pretty simple and I think I can handle the CCV. How long do you guys think this would take me. I'm no master mechanic but I've done DIYs like VCG, vanos seals, the alt and fuel pump with no problems. I'm sure this will be more difficult though

If you have tackled the other things on your list, you can likely address the CCV. If you pull the oil filter housing off, it will make the job a bit easier. Just be careful that you get all your hoses snapped properly. Some may be hard to get a good angle on them to properly connect them.

You might want to also go ahead and replace both the upper and lower intake boot and clean the ICV while you are in there. Also search and consider pulling the dipstick to replace the O-ring as well as clean out the double wall dipstick tube.

If you can do the work, you might as well do the job and get all the PITA items sorted once and for all.

Good luck and also check the 3rd link in my signature to make sure your coolant temps are really correct. Most of these cars should run between 90-93C consistently unless under heavy load when the thermostat heater kicks in and drops the temps.

Should take about 3 or 4 hrs. Took me 4 days, got stuck and had to wait for parts. If you have a 1999 build pm me and Ill send you the link on how to disconnect/connected the throttle body harness, its this twist plug you have to set and lock. I didnt understand it, a simple clip would have done the trick lol bmw...

Ok guys i replaced the ccv and ofhg. Pretty time consuming but not too difficult. I put in the cold weather version and I followed the DIY video from bavauto. Unfortunately i still have a rough idle. And as i was driving it for a test drive after the install my coolant light came on and when i got back I had coolant all over the engine bay I can't pinpoint where it is coming from I'm guessing expansion tank or maybe water pump. Any ideas? I need a beer
