The wheel diameter should always a consideration. Seems 19"+ wheels are subject to bending if not mega-quality $$. We have terrible roads due to frost and winter madness. Potholes appear everywhere in the spring. A larger sidewall acts as a cushion to absorb sharp impact before the wheel tweaks. Super low profile tires are more expensive and designed to have less "roll" tearing around corners. That would not be a feature I realistically use as a daily driver.

So, if it's all about the looks, run whatever you like but if you're going big, spend the bucks for premium wheels. I pound the death out of my 17" Beyren mesh wheels with 225's on 'em. Nice for a $70 wheel. We're talking under a grand new, all around, with Toyo sport tires. I cringe seeing guys spending 3 grand for stupid wheels and tires. They don't look that great!

I agree with White_Knuckles. Which is why I went back to the 17". Luckily I only spent about $1,300 on the 20" with tires. They were Lexani tires. Inexpensive and good looking tread pattern. Again, not performance size or performance tires. Putting 20"s on a Bimmer is a self inflicted handicap. Shooting yourself in the foot - pin intended!

I've always felt that the 19" rear staggered with 18" on the front looks great - but unsure about what that does for performance.

As with anything on these cars, its a fine line between looks and performance. Im at the point now where I'm all about practicality, performance, and price. Hey, "3Ps"! That's mine everyone! Just made that up!

There is nothing wrong with going Plus 1 on a E46 325xi (going from stock 16 inch to 17 inch). In this case I would recommend going with a wheel that has tightly spaced "spokes" so that you don't see the smaller brake rotors as much, i.e. I have Beyern Mesh 17s on my '03 325xi and it is harder to see that the rotors have a pretty good gap than if I had used a Beyern 5 spoke wheel in the same size.

Now, on my '03 330xi sport which has 17 inch wheels, the stock wheels will now see duty as the winter tire wheels and in spring, a new set of Beyern wheels will be fitted in the 17 inch size with Plus 0 summer tires. With most roads in poor condition, it makes no sense to go to 18 or even larger wheels since the tire sidewalls are so small and the tires hold so much air so that they don't do a good job at helping to absorb road shock(s). If you do want to change from 17 inch, only go Plus 1 (to 18 inch).

This is the first thread I have read that is going in the opposite direction when talking aftermarket. I'm thinking the OP might have bought the wrong car. As for White knuckles, he is a stock rider (which is clearly his style and there's nothing wrong with it) but keep it in mind when asking mod questions. BTW, I hit a pothole on crappy road today with my stock wheels and cracked the front drivers side wheel. I'm not thinking the stock wheels and/or larger or smaller wheel diameter would matter. Also, in most cases a replacement aftermarkets costs just as much and less then an OEM.

Maybe the OP should considering a lift kit with with 16" wheels and 32" tires...

If not lowered, go with 16s - style 45 looks good because its fairly closed. You also save on unsprung weight at the corners. I notice a more agile feel when I switch to my 16s in the fall.

That looks so good!! Reminds me of growing up in Germany! You do not see many wagons in the US.

You're absolutely right, I've read that there may be as few as 20,000 E46 wagons in the US. Proud to say I found one with a manual!
