Has anyone put in the Z3 Rack?

Hi,

I am not a fan of the steering in my stock E46 M3. It's simultaneously too heavy and too numb. I've had the pleasure of driving many, many cars in the last six years, and while modern cars have figured out how to mesh speed-sensitive assist and steering feel, the E46 feels like it was an early adopter.

The only rack that fits our cars, that is linear, is the Z3 1.9l rack.

I found one, and I'm ready to buy it, but I wanted to see if anyone has done this rack swap, and if so, how it feels.

Thanks!

I have done extensive research on racks because I needed a new one. I saw stuff about the 1.9 Z3, but couldn't come up with anyone conclusively saying that it was 2.7 lock to lock. I would argue all racks are linear, but rather the change in angle on the wheels is a trig problem. I would just get a 02+ 330 rack. That's what I did. I think I'm just under 3 turns lock to lock and I love it. Will never accept anything less. I love the decreased steering effort in my daily driving and love it more in the corners...and you will too. Don't get the ZHP.

Do not buy from Rackdoctor unless you are fine double checking his work, not having your calls taken after purchase and not reply emails after purchase. This was my experience as of early February

Unfortunate news about Rack Doctor. I have found a rack on ebay, but I'm having trouble verifying if it's the right rack. Same with CL.

My issue with the M3 rack (in addition to it requiring too many turns LTL) is the progressive ratio. The teeth are closer together at the beginning, requiring more turns to move the wheels X amount. As you turn the wheel, the teeth are farther apart, requiring fewer turns to move the wheels X. For me this leads to uncertain steering amounts needed for a variety of corners, and for correcting oversteer. It's much easier to get used to a car that while always change it's front wheels the same amount in response to inputs on the steering wheel. That's my attraction to the Z3 rack.

I need to find people with other racks in their 46s, in town.

Thanks for the advice. The mission continues...

All I will say is that I had the same attraction to that rack, and probably have done some of the same research, but I could find no PN's strictly associated to the 1.9's, nor enough other data, to conclusively be able to say that the Z3 1.9 rack is different from any other non-M Z3 rack. I would say go test drive an 02+ 330i as if you're buying it to feel the ratio, and I can almost bet you'll love it. Good luck man
