Trip to Austin/San Antonio

The GF and I are driving down to the Austin/San Antonio area 3/23-3/28 to visit some family. I'm looking for some cool places to stay in Austin and San Antonio. Preferably around some nice attractions, night life, sweet bars etc. nothing extravagant, just great atmosphere. Recommendations ate greatly appreciated.

Downtown Austin is a great place to stay. Close to a lot of dining and drinking options but if you're not into the shot bar/frat boy/sorority girl thing, 6th st between Congress and I-35 isn't for you. West 6th is where the crowd is a little older and East 6th (east of 35) is where the dive bars are. This is where the hipsters hang out, but great live music options. The newest area in Austin is on Rainey St. This area is very unique that all the bars there were former residential houses. It's not uncommon to have 3 bars in a row then a residential home followed by another bar. Bangers restaurant on this street boasts the largest number of craft beer on tap and all of Austins finest local brews. Whole Foods HQ on 6th and Lamar makes for a nice lunch and experience.

As for BBQ you have a variety of options. Franklins bbq is considered the best right now but plan on getting there early and lining up because they usually sell out by 1 pm. The Salt Lick is also great and the ambiance there is what sets it apart from the rest, it's about a 30 minute drive from downtown but worth it in my opinion. LA bbq on s. 1st is also a favorite of some.

Getting around downtown is fairly easy with pedicabs all over so you won't have to worry about driving. Ask the drivers about all these areas they'll also offer suggestions.

Check out Alamo Street in San Antonio, FEAST has really good brunch and there are a few places to get a drink

The Salt Lick for sure for BBQ. It's in Dripping Springs.
