I did some research on this earlier, I have this to add: (my post from another forum)

A friend of mine (who is in the middle on gun control) commented that it was very interesting, but was curious how the US and UK differed when calculating violent crime statistics.

From my research, it seems that the numbers are calculated fairly similarly. They have different titles for crimes, but a similar definition. The two biggest differences I found are, the Home Office does NOT include stats of crimes where the victim is under the age of 16. Also, the definition of a "murder" in the home office stats is a convicted murderer, therefor a multiple murder is not accounted for. A 2002 study found that 11 million crimes were omitted from the UK's official figures.

According to the US's analysis of the UK's crime (CIA), it is almost double than what is even shown from the home office stats in this video. Amazing what the media will have you believe.
