Or ban slides...they can make it a REALLY general law so that kids no longer have slides at the playgrounds...just to be safe...

To be really Proactive >
Why don't we just ban prisons? If a criminal is habitual... Why waste OUR money & time housing them in a hotel with some barbwire fence to protect them from us??

Seriously though that woman did exactly what all responsible Americans should be free to do...
own a gun(s) and use it to protect their family.

Side NOTE:
Topic for high capacity mags:
If this situation had involved multiple intruders (ie: 2-3 persons) This lady would've needed at least 18 rounds just to put enough bullets in each of them (equally) to slow them down let alone stop them. Since this guy was still able to escape out of the house AND drive off with 6 bullet wounds!!!

And what do you suggest for the overwhelming population of irresponsible Americans?

They still have a right to defend themselves. If their "irresponsibility" happens to reach a tipping point where they commit a crime... take the appropriate action, but not before.

Who do you know that hasn't performed some sort of irresponsible action?

I suspect your a proponent of allowing 8 year old children to legally purchase firearms, granted they pass a background check and know their ABC's?

Why not take a proactive approach? I have seen and been around quite a few irresponsible gun owners. To be honest I would love to see a safety course required with the purchase of a gun. I think the scariest thing is the amount of people that own guns that don't know how to safely handle/operate them.

Not everyone has the time or money for said classes. Enforcing such a rule could potentially limit the number of people who don't give a fuck from legally purchasing a firearm. That goes against everything the 2nd Amendment represents.

8 year olds are completely able to fire guns (quite well actually).
Age of ownership remains at 18 and I agree with that.

Ever see the requirements to get your drivers license? Now that's scary

That maybe true. But the question was regarding safety programs and gun ownership. Do you not agree that people who own guns should be able to operate and handle them in a manner that does not jeopardize others safety?

The 2nd Amendment has no such mandate. What reason could you possibly have for restricting age of ownership to 18 years of age or older? It's unconstitutional. It's un-American.

Do you not agree that people that drive 2 ton pieces of metal need to be able to operate and handle them in a manner that does not jeopardize others safety? What are the numbers in vehicle related deaths vs gun deaths (I'll even help you, you can include illegal firearms, and deaths caused by crime ie gang on gang shootings).

Things like this wouldn't happen if everyone had AR-15s with 50 round magazines. A semi-automatic society is a polite society.

Good question.

Here's my opinion >
Being humans does not guarantee intelligence nor can it be enforced by societal law(s), so hopefully we as thinking human beings will learn from mistakes made (by ourselves or by others) and then take appropriate actions to better/protect one's self.

Honestly, Irresponsibility is a Choice.
As Americans we are allowed the Freedom to man up and take the initiative, or to b!tch&moan for someone else will do the job for us...

I'm just glad to hear in this lady's situation... She had the foresight to grab a loaded gun when she went into the attic with her kids, and she had the Will to pull the trigger (6+ times) to calmly notify the intruder that he had made a mistake and entered the wrong house...
