E46 Sedan Steptronic to SMG II

I am growing tired of my Steptronic transmission and looking for a change. My friend has an SMG II transmission from an 04 M3 he is trying to get rid of and rather buying a manual transmission I am toying with the idea of getting an SMG transmission instead. I was wondering if a swap would be possible between a M and a non M (2001 330i) and are there any DIY threads? I've searched and only seen vague answers of it possibly working. Thank You.

M3 manual and smg transmissions are exactly the same... eccept the smg has a system on it to make it an auto.

I think if it came out of an smg you could still put it in a car as a manual.

but I don't think a non-m can run the m trans

SMGII electronics won't interface with the non-M DME. Just go with a manual. If you absolutely cannot drive with the 3rd pedal, then the SSG/SMG-US is your best bet. (Even then, I'd imaigne the harness is sufficiently different from the automatic harness that the retrofit would be a pain in the ass.)

Thanks for the replies. I was really hoping for 80ms shifts with an SMG II.

I imagine that it probably is possible to go from Steptronic to an SMG II, if you have the money. I don't have the knowledge to even estimate what it would cost, although I can imagine it would probably be in excess of $4,000.

However, I notice from your profile you have a 2001 330i and in my mind spending $4,000 + on a 9-10 year old BMW might not be the best idea. If you have that kind of cash I would personally either save it for upcoming repairs or put it toward a newer car or an M3 if you really want 80 ms shift times.

It is of course your car and if you really do want to do this, well, I'm in for pics.

Only way it'll work is if he also swaps in an s54 at the same time. The DME and EGS are just too intertwined for it to be feasible on a non-m

Is a 6 Speed from a ZHP a perfect swap?

Should be. You'll need the 6-speed flywheel, clutch, and driveshaft.

Tell your friend NOT to sell his SMG. He can make it into a manual tranny with a a few extra parts. Tell him to hit up Google and search a little. SMG is the SAME Getrag tranny thats in M3s, but with a hydraulic module and a few other things.
Tell his to search.

ANY 2WD 6cyl E46 tranny will bolt up to ANY 2WD 6cyl E46 engine(provided you have the corresponding flywheel/clutch/or tq converter )

SMG tranny is missing the shift springs, and they're not sold separately. The few people who did the conversion without buying a new transmission had the springs custom manufactured.

But they did it, and it was cheaper then swapping.
