I'm no physicist but I do know there is no sound in space. This is a result of no molecules for sound waves to vibrate off of. Wouldn't this mean a star, or any other spacial object, wouldn't have sound? Educate me please.

the sound you hear from the speakers in your car is the result of little electrical pulses and waves travelling down the wire and into a magnetic coil in your speaker, your speaker is like a translator of electrical impulses to audible sounds. So while acoustic longitudinal waves aren't transmitted through space, electromagnetic transverse waves are, and since pulsar's are big spinning balls with two beams of EM radiation shooting out of it, it creates the same effect as that electrical pulse going to your speaker.

OKay.... How did they film something that we can't create?? So this video is really just CGI?

The video and this thread are about what a pulsar sounds like...so yes, the video is just there as an example. It actually looks like an equalizer visualization plugin.

That isn't an actual video, but what you're hearing is an audio sample based on radio waves received by a telescope, so an increase in the strength of the radio wave is an increase in intensity of the sound wave we're hearing in the video. Pulsars spin with an incredibly stable period which is why you hear such a steady beat.

Thanks. Makes the video kinda lame... Why not just make it Audio only? Either way, cool stuff.

Damn, that was a good explanation.

All true, and well put.

However, and I think more to his question, the speakers in your car are being used to reproduce "real" sound. The singer's voice creates real sound waves in the air, which are recorded, transmitted and reproduced as sound waves in your car. In fact, the whole point of kickass recording, transmission and reproduction equipment/techniques is to produce sound that's as close as possible to the original real sound.

Stars don't produce any real sound waves to begin with, so at some point in the production process, some kind of translation decision has to be made that EM frequency X is going to be represented by audio frequency Y. In the same way that infared camera images are translated into visible light, the translation decision is somewhat arbitrary. The link you provided (cool find, btw) illustrates the various ways that translation can be done and the effect on the final result.

brandonwish, this vid is really "what a star would sound like if our ears could 'hear' EM radiation in this way". It would be a different exercise to put together an example of what a star would sound like if there was an unbroken body of air between our ears and the star. And it would likely sound quite different.
