A modular PC designed to let users to play Steam games on their TV has been unveiled at CES.

Codenamed "Piston", the prototype, developed by Xi3 Corporation and funded by Valve, was unveiled at the CES trade show in Las Vegas.

The set-top box will allow users to access thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system, a statement said.

Plans for the living room-friendly console emerged early last month.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era for Xi3," said Jason Sullivan, founder and chief executive of Xi3, in a statement.

"This new development stage product will allow users to take full-advantage of their large high-definition TV displays for an amazing computer game experience," he added.

"As a result, this new system could provide access to thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system that exceeds the capabilities of leading game consoles, but can fit in the palm of your hand."

Despite the grapefruit-sized device being on show on both Valve and Xi3's stands at CES no details of its internals have been given. Other Xi3 computers are based around dual core Intel chips and use solid state storage.

Valve, best known for the Half-Life, Left4Dead and the Steam online game store has long been known to be working on a console or set-top box that puts PC-based titles onto a TV. It is not yet clear if Piston is the hardware gaming gadget that will bring that project to fruition.

Whoa. Source for that image? That can't be right.

EDIT: Just looked at the picture in the posted article. It's just an exploded view. Taking into account the size of a USB port, that's the legitimate size. I assume they're using flash memory or something?

4k OLED TV prototype from Panasonic

Uses the much fabled "printing" technique to literally print the OLED material onto the substrate. This should lead to reduced manufacturing costs compared to the other first gen OLEDs, like the LG going on sale in march for $12,000. Still beats the $20k that plasmas started out at though, and those were pretty bad by today's standards.

I'm worried the videocard isn't up to task on these small factor forms.

I see the card on top. And it looks small.

Did you see the Tegra 4 announcement?

Mobile processors are getting perilously close to the capabilities of current gen (7 year old) consoles.

I know some games have enhanced graphics modes specifically for the Tegra 3 and it looks stunning. Tegra 4 has 12x the graphics performance iirc. So yea, beast mode.

I actually kinda like the notion that you have a PS3 or Xbox and it lasts you 4-8 years till it's fully replaced. I imagine if we move towards a PC based system that plays on your TV, there will be constant hardware upgrades and yada yada.. Could make things worse.

Samsung's processor design team has been on a roll with fast chips this year with the Exynos 4 Quad and Exynos 5 Dual. Based on its agenda for the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, that momentum isn't about to stop. A company presentation at the event on February 19th will delve into a new heterogeneous, 8-core processor that relies on ARM's concept of big.LITTLE computing: one half is a quad-core, 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A15 that will do all the heavy lifting, while the other is a quad 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 that takes over in quieter moments. We don't know much more about the chip beyond the expected 28-nanometer manufacturing process, but it's easy to see a mobile chip that's fast without having to consume much energy in its downtime. Most of the mystery surrounds where Samsung will launch the processor first, rather than what it can do: the big.LITTLE chip would be most valuable in a smartphone, but a potentially large size could relegate it to tablets early on.
