I'd spend the 14k on 2 VIP escorts for a weekend, 6 grams of Molly, 4 cases of water, and an economy pack of condoms.

i love how everyone says "pretend like you didn't get a raise"

like you all are still living the same lifestyle u were when u started your careers, lmfao. get off your soapbox.

people don't go their whole lives living like they did when they were entry-level. if they did, we never would have been in the financial mess we were. i'm all for living within your means, which i 100% support, but to always "pretend like you didn't get a raise" is something less than 5% of people actually do. i'm even suggest it may be less than that once people are 7-15 years into their careers.

1/2 into savings/investments (assuming debt free), the other 1/2 goes to quality of life increases (vacation, saving more for a better next car, etc). That's how I deal with all of my raises when I get them.

when you work as hard as you have over a certain time period you sometimes feel like you owe it to yourself. Especially when you have gone through tough financial times and had to really cut back on fun or hobbies to get where you are today.

Agree.

The reason we are in this financial mess is more because people started getting variable interest home loans and charging everything immediately after getting raise... There is nothing wrong with OP taking a bit of his raise and spending it on what he wants, as long as he is smart about it.

I would never change my spending habbits just because I got a raise..or cameinto some free money of some sort. If I need something..I buy it..If I want something....I buy it....if my fridge breaks or my stove...I go buy a new one. I live far below my means.....And I like it. It's like carring a concealed weapon.....It's a great feeling just to know you have it......and no one else knows......
