Can anyone explain this scenario to me.

Friend makes about 15k more. We both claim zero. I deduct my mortgage interest, taxes, and 401k which totals to about 12k. He gets over 2,000 back and I'm looking at about 1400. I would think I would get more because I have so many deductions making my taxable income much lower.

does that $15k put your friend in the higher tax bracket?

Probably because your buddy deducts more than you and/or donates money and tracks every penny. You can also deduct stock market losses, gambling losses, etc etc... which he probably does.

Time to get a CPA.

That could be it.

So, he's likely going with a standard deduction as opposed to itemizing like you are.

There's a ton of ways that it could be possible, but my best guess is that it might have something to do with his withholding....could be that his company withholds more from a bonus payout if he gets one. Look at both AGI's, both taxes paid/withheld, and deductions and you should be able to see where the difference comes up.
