Thumbs down an update - passed on the car

So I went to look at the vehicle over the weekend and was surprised to find a vehicle in such poor cosmetic condition. The photos showed a clean e46 328ci however the car had rust everywhere. I suppose it has to do with Chicago winters. Rust on the rear quarter over the wheel, rust under the trunk lid, dings dents.....seemed like an unloved vehicle (and the owners garage had 3 electronic lifts with a vast array of classic and modern vehicles on and below them)

Mechanically the car was sound, shifted great and only had the brake pad wear and traction control warning lights on. I took it on quite the extended test drive and was impressed with how the car drove at 150k.

I ended up passing due to the cosmetic condition of the car, I can fix most mechanical problems and I am up for a challenge, but when it comes to body work I wouldn't even know where to begin. Once rust starts, it is nearly impossible to stop without extensive body work.

Thank you for all the support via this thread, I will keep looking for my next project car.

Just my 2 cents. I bought my 2000 328i in 2007 for 6500 and with 140k. I've replaced the water pump, brakes and fixed some oil seals and replaced transmission lines after losing all the fluid. I now have 228k was reversing out of the driveway after the car sat for 2 days in temps in the teens. Lost a bunch of tranny fluid and am afraid it may finally be done.

I will give the owner a thumbs up with maintenance as the car had a folder full of what he had done, just seems like it never went through a wash. The reverse issue he talked about I never experienced and it was a very cold Chicago day when I drove it. Want this guys number, for the price it could be a replacement for your 228k 328i

unless your buying from an avid enthusiast who will do the job right himself OR just take it to a BMW tech who knows what hes doing, then dont buy.
