Get her a Camry... My 2008 Camry Hybrid was fully loaded with as much (if not more) HP than the V6. I drove it being gas wise & I got CONSISTENTLY 38-39 MPG combined city/highway. If my wife drove it (gas or brake - no coasting) then she would get 34-35 MPG. I had over 100k miles when I traded it in for my E46 and only problem I ever had was to replace the water pump (under warranty) at 92k miles. I enjoy driving my E46 but man I sure do miss my Camry! 10 Years or 150,000 Miles = $6000(Aftermarket is cheaper) is not a good investment? You spend more on gas in about 2 years if you got 25 mpg vs a prius @ 45 mpg.

Let's be real here: if your e46 has 150,000 miles right now would you shell out $6000 to fix one single failing part? It's easy to say the prius is a good investment when it is still "new". But 10 years later I doubt you'd be willing to pay more than the car's worth to fix it.

Just buy a newer Prius at that point... it's not a good investment.

What about a diesel? If your mom is concerned about saving fuel, diesels are great. My dad has a Jetta TDI that he gets about 600 miles from a 14 gallon tank.

NO PRIUS EVER HAS COST $6000 TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. The battery is $2700 AT MOST, and you can get plenty of aftermarket/rebuilt solutions for LESS than $1000.

All of this is assuming you EVER need to replace it. There are very very few people who ever will have to...
