Bmw has extended their warranty on the fuel pump up to 100,000 mi

Well that's why I said E90 since it's a four door. But if a G35 was too small, then the M would be too.

I should really know this but alas I don't, is the engine in the 535 the same as the 335? If it is, I'd stay the hell away from it.

And what is the reason for that?

The G35 is bigger than the E90, and the M series Infiniti is larger than both. I would go with the Infinti, one of the best cars in the class. (It was better than the E60 5 series.)

I'm in the same boat as OP, I've been looking at (in order of most favorable):

2009-10 MB C63 AMGs with ~20k in miles.
2009-10 BMW M3
2012-13 BMW 335i
New Lexus GS 350
1994 Ferrari 355

Covered or not, it's not a reliable engine and odds are it will need to be taken in at some point during ownership. My mechanic with whom I am in touch with constantly tells me that his shop (which deals mainly with bmw's) is always dealing with issues regarding that engine.

To each their own

550i M sport, less maintenance and better mileage than the M5.

I would spend the money on a pre 2012 Audi S5. Premium package, tech pack and B&O upgrade. Has everything including the V8, very sexy car, and looks very nice to drive.

Softer on the road than an M3, but still has power and presence.

I'm not sure what you mean. Nobody here had direct experience with engineering that engine, did you? Driving one doesn't change the facts.

It comes down to whether you listen to a person who has direct experience working on hundreds of cars a week vs one who owns one and may be biased towards it.

At the end of the day, I'm not knocking it, it's still an awesome engine from a performance perspective. I just don't believe it to be the best choice from a reliability perspective. Given the choice, I'd go with the 550 OP.
