How much does VANOS do?

I'm trying to eliminate some possibilities of a problem I've been having. Yesterday, I unplugged, cleaned, and tightened the connections of the VANOS solenoids, both exhaust and intake side. I drove it afterwards last night with no change, and this morning with no change. Then, before leaving work I turned in the car and got a CEL (P1525), which is apparently a bad VANOS intake solenoid connection. This is supposed to therefore put me on a pre-determined VANOS mapping, which will reduce power, correct? I felt absolutely no difference in power and MPG was exactly the same.

Could this mean I've had a problem with the solenoid and cleaning the connection just finally showed there was one? I checked the connection, and unless I somehow damaged the wiring there's nothing wrong.

Thanks!

Yes I did, already solved.. shouldn't have made a thread. The connections were fitted tightly outside, but the pins on the wire-side connection had actually sunk into the connector so they were not in contact.. weird. I just pushed them back up and all is well.. dumb mistake, my apologies!

Still, very odd that a disengaged VANOS felt exactly the same as normal driving.. hmm.
