How do you save the SMG settings?

I just bought my 2nd M3

hooray, except this time its SMG. I tried using the seat memory to save my D2 and S4 but it always ends up defaulting to D3 and S3. I've tried some of the suggestions like turn the key to on (engine off) and set your settings and all that jazz but I can't seem to save the SMG settings. I tried to do a search of this in the forum but could not find a link so sorry for duplicating if i did. HALP

Huh?? Seat setting?? The programmable seat settings give you three options to save seat and mirror positions. With regards to the transmission the shift settings the car requires no saving of a program and will/should stay where you leave it. For example I always use manual mode S5. My wife uses auto mode s3, when ever either of us drive the car the " S" setting is where ever we left it.

That's awesome for you but it doesn't keep the settings I last left it. I would put it in D2 for city driving then bump up to S4 sometimes S5 to get on the freeway, but when I start the car again the next time its back to D3/S3.

Shot in the dark but maybe try an SMG reset?

Just went out between 40-60 mph, put it in neutral, held down the +/- shifters for about 5 seconds and put it into shift. Hopefully that resetted it. Anyways, still doesn't save my SMG settings always goes back to stupid D3/S3.

Well you stumped the guys on M3F as well. This is the first time I heard of such a problem. Also curious to see what comes of this.

Hows your battery life/condition? Try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting. also check to see if you have the latest smg software (recall)

Someone has said the setting is stored on the car key. If you need a different setting, you may have to get your car key reprogrammed by the dealer or have to order another key...
I myself has the same issue. SMG would not store on my previous setting.

Try with a different key. Kinda weird though, mine always saves it

mine used to save my last setting, till i got the euro SMG flashed, now when i throw it into drive after i start my car or after reversing, it goes into D3, but when i throw it into "S" it goes into S4 (my last setting), hope this shines some light on this subject for you fellas.

Tried my spare key and even the valet key and it still saves to D3/S3. Very strange... Everything else saves like my radio seat mirrors but not my SMG settings ugh

ill ask my local BMW dealer or the Dinan shop down the street from my house.

Mine saves automatically - not sure what is going on with yours, that is very odd.... Out of curiosity, have you asked a BMW dealership?

Did you ever found out the problem same thing with mine I live and Philly for I would like to keep it on a2 but always starts in a3/s4 and maybe it stays like that because mine is an 2002 and the newer m3 say D for drive instead of A for automatic
