So he's just guilty of saying a person he'd never actually met was his deceased girlfriend and that he was devastated because he truly thought they were going to get married?

After hearing about the details of his interview, I actually think this was a possibility. He's a goody tho-shoes Mormon. I could see him getting duped in this way.
Plus, the guy that allegedly pulled the prank had done this before, using the same name and the same pictures of the girl.

Still can't believe he had no knowledge. Father said they used to meet, he says he lied about it. Didn't go to funeral or bedside (neither corresponded to a game). I also read they met at a Stanford game, so she was real or no?

There is just way to much to overcome here.

That is a stupid assumption, I played the same prank on my friends and roommate in college. We went to a party and he was waiting for his imaginary girl the whole night. This stuff happens all the time. It's just that you don't hear about it.

Easy there sport. I am assuming just like the rest out there. How could Manti got into an "online" relationship for two years when numerous interviews with him and his dad indicated that they have met in person at Stanford and she had travelled to Hawaii to meet him? I can't wrap around the idea that she was dying of leukemia in the hospital and he didnt even visit once.
Your prank only worked once or twice in a short period. It would not last for two years like Manti. It's a stupid comparison.

Again, I thought they met in Sept last year, that's like 4 months ago. He is a busy person, with football season going, it's no surprise, he never met her.

He is a guy who got a picture of a hot chick and assumed she was real. It does not surprise me that he called her, "girlfriend". Lying about vacation and meeting her is a bit much. But someone of his status doesn't want to be embarrassed about this relationship. How lame would it sound if he said, he met her online and they have never met. He probably truly felt she was real and thought he will see her eventually.

I don't think he is that stupid, to jeopardized his career with a silly lie like this. I can't imagine him being in on this hoax. Being the person that he is, he knows someone will check on her status. When you think it's true, he don't think about it.
