Can anybody here offer any ideas to why the third gear may grind? Possible solutions? Any way to find out for sure?

There is pretty much no way of knowing why it grinds. If it grinds going into third gear it could be because the syncros are worn out. A trans fluid flush may help the issue.

But honestly... in these cars I don't think its a huge deal. These transmissions aren't impossible to find and the labor isn't that bad either. If it still drives fine, then lucky you. But if the gear goes, you would have to replace it... but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

I don't know this car at all, I'm just posting to give you my input. However, the price seems quite fair IMO. What I'm trying to say is I personally wouldn't let the trans be a deal breaker.

Why tear and assume the problem is already in the transmission when there are exterior components (shifting components/bushings) that could cause the same problem.
