At work, do you have to look busy even when you're not?

It kills me. Certain days I'm slammed and I have a lot of work to do. Others are slow, I'm between projects or waiting for other people to complete their tasks so that I can resume mine.

Teh internet is frowned upon here.

To look busy, this is what I do:

I open alot of ssh/terminal sessions and at least have some command run once to have it filled with text.

A few of them I run 'top' and 'tail -f' some log file so that there is activity in some of the ssh sessions.

I also have a web browser opened up to our RT system "looking" over a ticket that was probably resolved already.

Then I just move my mouse around and cycle thru the windows clicking to make them active and space out some times.

I'm think about buying a bicycle. I'm not trusting myself with a motor bike yet. But thanks for the advice.

i always have my email in another tab, so i can quickly click over. if im doing that for too long, i just have the genome browser or some paper up, so it looks like imd oing something useful.

when i first started working, i would always look busy, until my boss asked me if i ever do anything that i 'shouldnt' be doing (i guess it was weird that i didnt). its not as bad now.

My Ride: is lame
I surf all the time at work, I just make sure it's AFTER I'm done my work, or as a 'break' or something.
