Help fix a physical problem...scope and rifles.

Ok guys, I have a weird problem. I am a right handed shooter. Now, when I am shooting with a rifle and a scope, I want to close one eye. Unfortunately, I don't know why, I can't close my left and keep the right open. I close the right and the left stays open. Is there any sort of exercise to combat/train to fix this issue? Is it muscle memory? It's really frustrating. I'm about to go myself a pirate patch

have you ever been able to close the left eye while keeping the right one opened?
If you have done so in the past then I'd suggest normal practice to get it back.
If you have never been able to do so then try to use the hand to hold it down first to get it into the routine.

Whenever I attended a hunting firearm class (2 day, 16 hr) they taught us that it is advisable to keep both eyes open when looking through a scope. So, when I fire my 30-06 I keep both open.....it took some getting used to but it feels normal for me now.

Yeah both eyes open. Takes a little while to get used to, but when you do, it's a total epiphany.

Gotcha. Today was hard because it was extremely windy and extremely cold. As a result, the non-scope eye kept tearing up, which forced me to close one, but unfortunately, it was the scope eye. Come to think of it, I don't think I was ever able to close just my left eye, but will try as you guys suggested, keep them both open. I guess it's a reflex to try and close one eye when looking into a scope. Maybe I can duct-tape some binoculars on to the top of my AR

I have the same problem. It makes shooting with irons very interesting.

I used an eye patch as a kid. Now I shoot with both eyes open for everything except pistol.
