Mars...would you go if you can never return to Earth?

Driving to work this morning and listening to the radio, the topic came up about NASA's recruitment for a future mission to Mars. While I'm sure there was some misreporting, hype, and sensationalism, the radio spokesman discussed that NASA is seeking candidates, but the catch is that they must be STD free and they won't be able to return to Earth.

Doing some fact checking, NASA was indeed recruiting, but there was no mention of STD checking and not being able to return to Earth.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/...d-them-to-mars

However, it does pose an interesting question. Would any of you do so knowing that you can never return? Go forth, colonize Mars, and re-invent yourself?

and just FYI, the USAJOBs announcement appears to be closed

If I didn't have a family here, I'd go in a heartbeat. What better way to get immortalized than to be one of the first people to set foot on another planet?

If they plan a mission to colonize another world with like 10 people, there will be a massive amount of inbreeding going on after a while...

I always dreamed of being an astronaut and going to Mars...and becoming an astronaut was a serious path I was going to take well into college and beyond, but I recently realized that a more important dream of mine is to have a loving family here on Earth, and I wouldn't want to be away from them for months on end. At this point in my life, I have stopped my pursuit of becoming an astronaut, and no I will not go to Mars.

Reading your post made me realize that speaking about which planet you want to live on sounds pretty insane and it is definitely a possibility for humankind in the future. Like "I would love to live on Mars but Earth is better suited for me" sounds pretty crazy to me, but will someday be a reality.

Almost nobody in the world remembers the names of any of the people after Neil Armstrong who walked on the moon.

Half of those people think he's a disgraced Tour de France cyclist.

don't know. But if you're on Mars, you'd have gravity there.
