These rims are 235/45 R17 and mine are 225/50 R16. What would that do?

OP, are you looking to buy wheels that "you" like? Or are you looking to buy wheels that other people like?
When people say something negative about what I purchased for my own use, I just kindly remind them that I did not buy it for them to like. I mean really, would you eat something you didn't like, just because someone else's taste prefers it? Just buy the wheels that you like and enjoy them...

Those are e39 wheels, won't work with e46 without the adapters. But they are better than the first ones.

Yes, hub centric adapters or hub centric rings. The center bore of e39 wheels are larger than e46, hence the adapters will be needed.
However, your first problem will be offset. e39 wheels will be way too aggressive. Get the specs of the said wheel and check if they will fit. If the offsets work then hub centric adapters will make those wheels fit for you. e46's take around 40 offset, e39s came with around 20. Hence, the wheels will stick out of by 20mm. I am just giving you some ballpark numbers, you will have to check with the exact spec of the wheel.

You might have to run thinner tires and roll the fenders. Yes the wheels will work with hubcentric adapters. Those wheels on the second link look good, but do you really want to go through all the trouble of hubcentric adapters, rolling fenders and all? I would save the money and buy some other wheels thats more of a direct fit. Most people use about 10mm spacers to get the aggressive look but 20mm is a bit too much. Imagine your wheels coming out by 20mm from the current position(or measure 20mm from your current wheel) that is if your current wheels are of ET40 offset and see where you will end up. If you think its not going to rub, then go for it. But still you have to buy the hub centric rings and the bolts.

Don't try. It'll rub.
I know cause I have E39 ET15 17" BBS rims as summers. Even after rolling rear fenders. Still runs on bumps. I have 225/45/17 on fronts and 235/45/17 on rear I'll try 225 all around next summer.

Merc has ET15, you are going to buy ET20. Now the 5mm difference is something you will have to risk if you really want to buy those 17s. Just wait for the right wheels to pop up.
