iPhone/AT&T expert help needed :banghead:

So to make a long story short I bought a used iPhone 5 today from a used cell phone store. I called in to activate it and there was no issues, went over all the little phone/data tests with at&t customer service and it worked fine. About 30 minutes later the service stops working and it tells me that the phone has been blocked. So I contact at&t and it turns out that the device is reported stolen. Stupid me didn't get receipt or anything at the store so I doubt that I will be able to return it but I will still try tomorrow. At&t told me that there is pretty much nothing they can do and the worst part is the my 4s cannot be activated back until I get a new sim. Obviously I know this a shitty situation because the phone is stolen but I did pay money for it so there is anyway that i can still use it if I am unable to return it? Will unlocking it help? Worst part is that I don't get why at&t didn't inform that it was stolen/lost the first time I called to activate it

If it's a legit store, I don't see why you would have any problems getting a refund or replacement.

Thats the problem it wasn't really a legit store. I found it originally on CL. I usually avoid these kind of things but it was a good deal.

Plus I did call from the store to activate it and it was fine at first.

If it was stolen wouldn't it also tell me that when I checked the serial number for warranty with apple?

Bring it back to that store and demand a refund or a phone that isn't stolen.

If they don't, stand in front of the store and tell people that are about to walk in that they are scammers and not to buy phones from them.

In all seriousness though, its only blocked in USA, but can be used in another country no problem if its unlocked.

No because warranty is tied to the phone not the owner. AT&T put the phone on the blacklist, not Apple.

makes sense. So how would I avoid this when buying a used phone in the future? I've bought/traded many phones on CL before but this a first

Put it on ebay to sell Internationally only, I'm sure someone in Eastern Europe will give you top dollar for that phone.

This is more common then you think. Just because its blocked doesn't mean it was lost, could mean the owner didn't pay his bills, broke their contract, etc, etc.

Explain the situation and take it back to the shop, they will probably help you out and get you another phone.

If they don't take it back, you can factory unlock it and use it on any network other than AT&T.
